Default 1st trip to the drag strip... got 14 runs in...

Well I learned alot today... 1st ... next time I'll need a wheelie bar... 2nd with the little tires, I hit the rev limit before the 1/8th mile, but got some of the best times in normal ATV racing distances...I just got back, & haven't had time to pull together all the data... I did 14 runs today... here are my "bests"...

Fastest reaction time ... ( .804 ) done with the 23" X 10.5" X 12" Duro HF-224's

Fastest 60 ft time ... ( 1.929 ) done with the Duro's

Fastest 330 ft time ... ( 5.999 ) done with the Duro's

Fastest 1/8th mile time ... ( 9.781 ) done with the stock tires & wheels

Fastest 1/8th mile speed ... ( 64.07 mph ) done with the 26" Goodyear MTR radials

Fastest 1/4 mile speed ... ( 68.7 mph ) done with the MTR's

All runs were done with the stock CDI, & the original DGR Holeshot module ( just because it was there... look for a few pics... in my bio... soon...

Default 1st trip to the drag strip... got 14 runs in...

We went down to the Cedar Falls Iowa drag strip... Saturdays, they have test & tune... cost me $30.00, but got as many runs as I could squeeze in in 4 hours... there were 2 big Suzuki's that were running 150+ mph 1/4 miles... I was the only quad, ( mostly cars ), so I always ran with an open lane on the other side... there was mostly Minnesota people there... I pitted next to an pld nova 2, with wrinkle slicks... the guy ended up only living 7-8 miles from me ...LOL...

BARTLETT... If I can get my wheelie bar fabbed & set up, I may go this week end again ( the mud race season is starting & I have a $500.00 1st prize open class, to race June 12th... lots a switch over to do, between drag raceing, & mud bogging )... Once I get the quad to where I can really give it the nut, with out it ending up on top of me, then I have some clutching & performance mods to test ... most of my crew has commitments this weekend, so if I go, I'll likely be going by myself, or just with the wife... P.M. me your phone # & time to call, if you want to chat about going ???

I live outside of Albert Lea, & it is all 4 lane roads to Cedar Falls...

Default 1st trip to the drag strip... got 14 runs in...

1st off, when looking at these time slips, I can see that I'm going to need the wheelie bar... there were runs, that I pulled double wheelies ( where it came up, & I let off, brought it down, & cranked it again, while still rolling, only to have it come back up again... I hope to have a bar fabbed this week...
2nd... my reaction times are slow... ( I wasn't sure if I'd still get time slips, if I red lighted, so I was intentionally pretty "soft" on my trying to cut the light )... these slow reaction times effect all the other times, most critically the 60ft times...

3rd... I had intended to test 4 sets of tires, but found out after mounting, that the Duro's, & the Schredders, had the same mounted O.D. 22"... the Duro's run small... being that they were a better tread pattern & lighter, I opted to save the Schredders for the grass / dirt drags, rather than wear the tread on the asphalt...

4th... interstingly enough, each tire combo, had a best time, or speed, in atleast one catagory... I didn't get a weight on the MTR's, mounted on my double beadlock wheels, but they are MUCH heavier, than the stock tires, mounted on stock wheels... the stock tires had the fastest time in the 1/8 mile, but only by 100ths of a second, over the MTR's, which had the fastest speed in the 1/8 mile...

5th... tire S.O.P. feel, O.D. & related tread pattern... The Duro's, clearly have a better tread pattern, for drag racing on asphalt ( which was concrete by the way )... however they did not wheelie as much as I thought they would... more study is needed here... IMO, them spinning out easier could have been that they are a harder rubber compound, or that with the way the clutch was set up, the smaller & lighter tire was easier to spin... either way, if, I were going to race other ATV's, at common ATV racing distances, I'd be taking the little tires... they were consistantly faster in the 60 ft & 330 ft times... however I did hit my rev limit with these tires before the 1/8 mile mark...

The stock tires IMO, are still junk... they may bite better on grass / dirt drags, but would spin the easiest of these 3 tires... they outweighed the Duro's on Billet wheels, by about 2 lbs...

The MTR's may have been the stars here... the D.O.T. type of tread, combined with the radial footprint, & traction, & the 26" O.D. gave the fastest overall speeds in the 1/8 mile, & 1/4... they were only 100ths of a second slower in the 60' & 330' distances... & this tire was the one that hooked up ( often double wheeling )... I may pull the stock tires off, & mount the MTR's to the stock wheels ( the double bead locks are much heavier than the stock wheels )... then add the wheelie bar & see what they can do...

6th ... I did start out my runs, with the suspension strapped down... because we did get to run so many runs, I took the straps off to run 3 runs ( I had 2 of the 3 double wheelies with the sraps off )...IMO, they did help some, to keep the front end down...

feel free to ask questions, it's probably easier to answer specific questions... Later

Default 1st trip to the drag strip... got 14 runs in...

The wheelie bar is done, If we don't have rain on Saturday, I'll be heading back to the strip... probably by myself, so, no new action pics... I'll take at least one of the wheelie bar installed on the quad... one thing I noticed, is that with the wheelie bar mounted solely to the swing arm, the angle / lift on the wheeled end changes pretty drastically, as the rear suspension compresses... I will likely reinstall the springs for the extra shocks in the rear ( they are currently removed for normal riding, I typically add them, if I have my rear rack / spare tire carrier on, & for pulling... looks like they work for dragging, with the wheelie bar as well ), rather than strapping the rear end down, like I did last time... once the wheelie bar times are dialed, I'll pull off the Prairie CVT cover & KBEC... "some people have claimed 2 more mph, with out it... this will be a good chance to prove / disprove that... once I have 3 runs with no KBEC, I'll install the Dalton primary cover, & make 3 runs with the cover, & stock springs & weights... as I'll be making these runs in groups of 3, & twice, once with the 26" MTR radials, & once with the 23" ( really 22" ) Duro's... I'll likely run out of time, before I get to the clutch springs...

I asked DALE ( Dalton )... about a recommendation for a spring for my "lead sled" ??? I currently have the 650 & 700 O.E. springs, as well as an EPI Pink, & Polaris yellow... I'm sure I'll likely find that the same spring will not perform at it's best, with both the 22" tires, & the 26" tires...

Look for fresh results on Sunday, or Monday

Reaction times have nothing to do with your 60ft times or your final times. You could sit there for 10 seconds and still have a 1.9second 60ft time. The timers don't start until you break the beams. Good runs though. One bit of advice, start launching when you see the last yellow, thats how I've been cutting .5xx second reaction times while drag racing for 15 years....

LAP... I listed it below, but the runs were done at the Cedar Falls, raceway... 1/4 mile drag strip... 96LA... I know I could have cut the light better, however I was more concerned about not flipping over backwards...LOL...

The was too much rain to go to the strip on Saturday, but I did go out to the paved road, & dial in my wheelie bar... whoo yaaa ... no wheel spin, & a little hick up, when the wheelie bar wheels touch, it does shift over a few inches to the left, but is very controlable with full WOT from the start, with me sitting fully back in the seat, to put weight on the drive wheels... really wish I could have gotten some time slips...
