I now have the prairie street legal and licensed, and am in need of finding a long wearing tire. I would like something with an all terrain tread so I wouldn't have to switch when I went for a trail ride. I am hoping some of you know of some hard compound tires. Thanks

 

what did you have to do to make it street legal?

 

Any tire that the tread lugs overlap in the center of the tire will work.

 

They need to be a hard rubber compound or they will wear as fast as stockers. 589s last a long time on pavement.

I think the tire is suppose to be D.O.T approved.

 

cant you just get a car tire for a 12in rim or find car rims that'll fit like my buddy did he did burnouts all day long

 

ROLS & DOC, have given you your 2 best options...

they still make 12 auto tires, that will go right on your rims... I know Goodyear & Yokahama, both have them, the Goodyear Club, is a 155 / 80 / 12, & Yokahama, has them in 165 / 70 / 12 & 155 / 80 / 12... the truoble with these are the tires O.D.'s are between 21.5' & 22.5"...

The hard surface kits, offer a 14" steel wheel ( as far as I know, the wheels are only available as part of a kit, with either the ag tires, or the 14" radials )... if you had the tires, you could mount any 14" tires you wanted on those rims...

another option, is a custom wheel manufacturer... I have info on my desk, for a company that will make an aluminum wheel, in your bolt pattern, in 15" or 16" size... this would allow you to mount any of the light truck tires, or all season radials, the problem with the custom wheels is that the cost just under $250.00 each, & have about a 2 month lead time...

 

Thanks all for the replies, I think I'll get a set of the 14 inch wheels like Doc posted, thanks for the link. For those of you that wanted to know what it took to get the quad street legal. Amazingly not too much here in my county, I assume it would be the same in other parts of South Dakota. Headlight, taillights, license plate light, horn, mirror, speedo, and I thinks thats about it. Turn signals were not required. I would show you a pic but it looks just like a stock P700 only with mirrors that I take off while trail riding. I was thrilled with how easy it was and it has been alot of fun to run around town with it. To those of you that are interested, I just went down to the county courthouse and they had a specific form to fill out for registering a atv for street use. One of the benefits of living in a rural state I suppose.

newbeatle-I love the custom wheel idea but that is cost prohibitive at this time maybe sometime in the future.
