Thinking of giving it all up.....
#11
Riding can be dangerous. People do get injured or killed. I've been hurt a few times, and currently am injured from two quad wrecks in the last year. Stuff happens. But never for a minute do I consider giving it up. The next time I throww a leg over something, my brain immediatley says, "look stupid, if you drive stupidly, you will suffer" and then my brain engages the throttle modulator into my thumb, when my thumb twitches and hits the WFO limit, my brain says "whoa dummy, where you goin?" and my thumb backs off the WFO mark. When I see that awesome jump and want to jump real far, my brain says " yo stupid, you've got a bad back and messed up legs" and then that throttle modulator kicks in again.
But seriously, I'm fifty years old, I want to ride and have fun, but I know I'm not 17 any more, and I know my limits, and I even back off those limits most of the time. I ride safe as I can, but I still am going to throw it around a little, I'm still gonna get a little air. But I always ride like I have to go to work monday morning and earn enough to pay Mr Kawasaki, and Mr Bank of America, and Mr Chevy. Even so, I managed to injure my self twice in the last year, one time was my stupidity not realizing I was going over the top of a razorback dune....oh oh......the second time, different quad, thought I was in control and did not recognize the hazard, and ended up rolling the P700 over on me......
Hang in there man, when you feel better you will want to ride again. But when you ride again, don't go for the fifty foot jump, go for the two foot jump. My Father was an airline pilot after a Naval Aviator's career, and he used to say " there are bold pilots, and there are old pilots, but there are no bold old pilots". I think there is lesson in there. And the older you get the the slower your going to heal. Have you ever seen an old guy ride??? They just putt around, but they are having fun doing it......
So I'd say if you want to ride like the wind, your gonna pay the piper, sooner or later. If you ride smart, you'll probably ride forever, and that's my plan. Yeah, go fast, but think smart, throw it around, but don't throw it away.
Hang in there dude! Live to ride again. Riding is just too good to quit.

Home dawg ; Give yourself some time, it is grueling and expensive and painful and just a plain beat down thing. Kliff pretty well summed it up with the rest of the guys, concentrate on getting well and healing because that helps alot and you will heal. Then what are you gona do , you got to have a hobby, when you get on a bike the next time only you will know for sure. I wish you the best for sure and glad you got a second chance, life is good. I sometimes wonder what the old timers thought when they got tossed from a Mule or a mean 4ss horse kicked stomped , and bit em I reckon you shoot it and go get another one LOL! get well J.H.

well, the reason I started riding quads was my 350 dirtbike bit me bad to the tune of 3 weeks on my back and 3cracked ribs and a bruised lung....dont let that fall keep you from getting back on the horse...

Amen to that. Been hurt pretty bad twice, myself. I stayed away for a little while, but I always come back, I guess it's in my blood. Heal up quick, and learn from your experience. I hope your recovery goes well..............Ernie

HomeDawg, Sorry to hear about your accident. Hope you get well soon. As you heal, take the time to think about what you enjoyed about riding and that your injuries were caused by pushing the limit. If you continue to ride, learn from this experience and ride within the means of you and your bike. I have watch my wife and youngest daughter roll their quads. Fortunately, they walked away unhurt. It wasn't easy running to my daughter as the quad was laying on her leg. But, they learned from their wrecks and are more conscience when they ride. We continue to ride because together, it is great family fun. Wishing you a speedy recovery. Lt. Dan

My prayers will be with you Home Dawg, I was raised riding dirt bikes and as long as I stayed out of trouble and maintained at least a c in school I could ride as much as I wanted too. I never was in trouble got married and raised my daughter with the same set of rules only with atvs. She was never in trouble and it was something all of us could do together and it was cool. Now I take my granchildren riding once again following the original rules set forth by my parents. There have been some bad accidenrs, concussions broken bones etc. and I would be lying if I said there were times I considered if it was all worth it. But looking back I can honestly say it has been worth it for me and my family. The great times definatelly out weigh the bad and chicks dig scars!

6 weeks in the hospital! That is how long I had to think of all the same thinks you are going through. They said I wouldn't walk again and etc, etc, etc. Well I can walk and without a limp. The accident was all my fault and like so many others have said pushing it past the limit. I was on a street bike doing wheelies at 60mph down the freeway.
Well when I got out of the hospital and got home the insurance company called and told me My NEW cycle was ready to pick up. They determined getting me a new cycle was the cheapest way out for them. That new cycle sat in the garage for almost 3 years before I rode it. That was several years ago and now, after alot of slow riding, I couldnt imagine not having some kind of toy or should I say toys in the garage.
Give yourself as much time as you need, when and if you are ready take it easy for awhile and see how you feel.
Good luck on your decision and hope you have a speedy recovery!

Hey there HomeDawg...
Thinking of giving it up huh? As a father and husband,I understand where your coming from. The guilt
that would come with your wife or child getting hurt due to something you introduced them to would be
very hard to deal with. The thing you have to remember is that as long as you ride within your limits, this
sport of ATV's can be the most rewarding and fun thing someone can get in to. I can hardly wait until my
son get's old enough to ride because the rewards of getting outdoors and away from the television are
great. Not to mention the whole father/son bonding thing. Hang in there man, Your learning a hard lesson
that you will never forget. This experience will probably turn out to be a blessing in disquise and will only
make you a smarter rider. Pass this experience along to your family and let them learn the dangers as
well as the rewards of this great sport.
