Default Prairie 700: Best trail upgrades

If you have say $1,000 to spend on a stock P700, what would you do with it? Pipe? Wheels? what?

I like fast paced trail riding and XC racing. My suggestion for $1,000 of mods would be:

1) Tires (bear claws, mudlites, bighorns, etc.) = $200 - 300
2) Progressive or Elka suspension springs = $125 - $225
3) Dyna CDI = $250
4) Nyroc muffler mod = $0 - $30 (depends whether you need to hire a welder or not)
5) Twin air filter = $25
6) Rejet carbs and shim needles with washers/install allen head carb bowl screws = $20
7) Purple Ice or Water Wetter radiator additive = $15
8) Tow rope = $15
9) Napa hose or DG snorkel = $15 - $50
10) Cooler full of your favorite beverage = priceless!

That's about it for $1,000 (later you might want to add a winch, taller mud tires and a lift kit if you go often go after deep mud).

Good luck and happy trails...

Do the springs stiffen it up for tighter handling?

The progressive/elka springs reduce/eliminate front end nose dives which occur frequently when you brake hard or make a sharp turn at high speeds. Also, these springs help reduce the number of times that you "bottom out" the front struts after hitting a big bump or land off a jump. They are well worth the investment IMO. These are also adjustable, but I found that I like the lowest setting for my type of trail riding/racing. If you are primarily a mudder, then these springs are probably not a big advantage.

Happy trails...

I've spent a little more then a grand,,~LOL But bang for the buck was not a proformance mod, But The Progressive Front Springs! And has been the best mod I have put on my Prairie so far. Handling is improved 100%. I picked up my front springs up on ebay for 110 bucks shipped to my door. Now I just have to find a good rear shock? I hear the elka's are real good as well? Im not sure about utahs terrain? But full belly, aarm, swing arm skid plates maybe a must and can set you back a few dollars? There are a lot of great proformance mods like Mikey has listed along with Degree Keys, Snorkles, DG this and That, CDI Boxes ETC. ETC. And making the Quad go faster is alwasy a good thing! You can search this form and find out about what a lot people have done to make there quads perform better! And are tastes are all a little differant So It will be your call on what you think is best for your style? But For me Handing and Protection is the most important and the best place to start. Because in stock dress the Prairie is already very good proformer... ~coop

Here is my list:

1) Some sort of spring upgrade (Progressive or elka)
2) Full skid plates
3) Tires
4) CDI or DG3
5) Intake - DG or nyroc snorkle
6) muffler mods

Also think other accessories that might suit you riding habits (gas tanks, heated grips, winch etc.)

Marylandatv,

Picture 9 & 10 are red cone mountain which is 12,600 feet high. Very nice ride lots of rock crawling at the bottom and then the stuff in the pictures which in spots was very steep and lose. I should be riding that this weekend if they don't calll for afternoon thunderstorms which can be very nasty exposed like that...

Yeah i'd love to be riding instead of writing code...
