Another P700 Jetting Question
#1
Mods as follows: Exhaust mod ,Twin air ,Snorkle mod,Rejetted mains to 145/142 runs great 1/2 to full throddle Studders and smells rich at 1/8 to 1/4 or so, does shimming the needles Make it richer or Leaner, any suggestions on how I should rejett or what i should try Thanks

I have the radiator hose for a snorkel and 142/145 mains with the air screws at 2 1/2 turns out on both carbs.....The needle's are already richer than the 650 needles so shimming them will make it worse, I left my needles alone and the studder (bog) at about 1/8th throttle went away.....you may still need more air........I can't imagine having to shim 700 needles, they are quite a bit shorter (richer) than the 650's.........

Options for more air?? could I put the stock jetting back?? and try that, not sure where to turn I am 2 1/2 turns out also , WHy does it seem so rich on the low end of throttle

I was having the same problem on my 700 and thinking that the air screws should be 2 1/2 turns out like the 02 650 seat says and the 700 stumbled and sputtered from 1/8 to 3/8 throttle. I then looked at the seat on the 700 and it says air screws 1 1/2 turns out, so I went to 1 1/2 out and fine tuned it from there and now it runs great with no hesitation or stumbles. I also have a Twin Air Filter, DG snorkle, black spring, and am jetted for 8000'-11500'. I have ridden it well above 13000' and it still ran great. With a little effort, I can still pull a wheelie at those altitudes. With all that said, I think that you are too rich on your air screws.

Here ya go guys what do u think I shimmed the needles and put the 138 142 jets back in to see if my mains were too big runs great now am afraid of bein too lean is there something else i should try??

Just finished tuning mine yesterday.
Mods are:
DG3, 2" full snorkel (out radiator cap hole), Uni-filter, and stock pipe drilled out (my way). I run 26" mudlites on stock rims.
My results:
Temp was 81°, altitude 482 feet. After much trial and error, I found that my plugs looked the best with 148/148, although it made the most power with 145/145. I didn't feel there was enough plug color with the 145/145 combo. No shims on needles, pilots at 3 turns out each.
Remember, this is a P700. Much of the info you find on here is for 650's. Also, these are KEIHIN jets, NOT Dynojets.
Now for the test details...
I took 3 new sets of plugs with me. Got it nice and warm with the old plugs, jets at 142/145, pilots at 3 1/4 (tuned by ear). Lined her up for the run and put the new plugs in, started it, and immediately took off. I ran it for about 1/2 mile wide open, hit the kill switch, kept throttle pinned open until stopped. Checked the plugs, and the rear had just a tint of color, front had none. Switched jets to 145/145, pilots at 3 turns (again by ear). The bike ran great. Checked plugs and both looked the same this time, but there still was not enough color on them. Switched to 148/148, 3 turns for the pilot, put new plugs in. Got a nice color on both plugs this time, and felt that it was about as good as its gonna get. I could tell it had more power with the 145/145 combo, but not enough to be worth engine longevity. BTW, I never considered shimming the needle because it ran great 1/4-3/4 throttle regardless of jets.
One thing I will recommend to anyone that checks their plugs is to run farther than 1/2 mile AFTER getting them close. I didn't want to run mine too far not knowing how lean I was running, but wished I had more room after I got it dialed in. I may even try again today with my extra set of plugs if I can find a place where I can run flat out for about 1-2 miles, just to make sure the jetting is exact. Hope this helps.
