Default Prairies in low most of the time??? Grrrrrr

My dealer/salesdweeb (when asked at the time of purchase a year ago) said to use low when climbing hills or towing something.
never mentioned what I'm reading here. Seems low gear is to be used unless you are sustaining speeds over 30pmh? I used to put around in high gear all the time.
I am now getting paranoid that the slight clacking I hear is related to the belt or bearings. I rarely used low unless dragging a tree or something.
The belt light came on- so its time to take it in anyhow for an inspection. Whats typical dealer labor for belt adjustment (take the light off) and adjust the valves?
Thanks!!

Your dealer was correct, just keep it flowing/rolling in high as to keep the belt engaged fully. I have a twist which is much more controllable in high, just blurp, blurp to keep it rolling over rocks and stuff, I got 5700kms out of the first belt.

The government just introduced turkeys to Nova Scotia, I'm going to raise a few to help get them established.

happy huntin/ATVing,

Not to change the subject, but- when I grew up here NO one saw a wild turkey, unheard of.
Now...man, they are literally everywhere-introduced. I just spotted some working grasshoppers at the edge of the flea market!
Great bowhunting for sure.

After reading here, its my impression you are only supposed to use high gear if you are going to sustain 30mph+
Its my take (again reading here) you keep in low pretty much no matter what.
Well off to the dealer this week anyhow for routine stuff.

well, in the BF hand book it says:
CAUTION
Use of the high range for heavy loads, climbing hills, pulling a trailer, and sustained low-speed riding can lead to premature wear of the torque converter belt and pulleys. Use the low range for these conditions.

Then further in the guide it says:
Low Gear:
Low gearing gives maximum torque at low speeds for climbing hills, pulling a trailer, or keeping constant low speeds for agricultural use.

For me I only use low if I am going though the woods on uncut trails where there are lots of rocks, trees down, ruts, hills, trees up and I have to go around them slowly because of all the trees around, etc. If it is somewhat open I leave it in High and slow down if I hit the conditsions above for a short time but I down shift out of high. I leave it in low if I know I will be driving a few mph for long times.

I leave my Prairie in Low 90% of the time. It has better pickup that way as far as I'm concerned... plus if it makes things last longer, I'm all for it! Then again, I rarely go faster than 30mph when riding in the woods / creeks around here. If I'm on an old road then in High she goes!

i use high gear all of the time. its not that hard to do the belt deflection and check the valves. your belt is probably really loose, that why your belt light came on. like you didnt know that. i have the tool to do the belt deflection.

i see turkes here and their, matter fact i heard them today. last year i almost ran one over with the prairie, not trying to. but when hunting season comes the run from me, havent got one yet.

Im in high most of the time, unless pulling or deep in mud. still on my first 02 belt and only had deflection adjusted once. Around here you cant go in the woods without seeing turkey. Shot 2 with a bow and 3 with shotgun last year. Two with shotgun this year. CWG, that looks like a nice bird.

Cool, I dont feel so bad about thumping around in low.

Hmmm, seems this turned into a turkey thread LOL. Good enough, seems the board is kinda slow.
I nearly ran into a dozen birds two days ago, still some very young ones in there- its my understanding they had a second brood due to all the dam rain we had here (north ohio)
alrighty, then. Time for a ride with the boy

Im in low most of the time. Only times Im in high is when I now Im getting ready to sustane speeds over 30mph or going to ride wheelies. I find it more controlable for wheelie riding in high range.
