minimus, I know you tried the Dyna cdi and degree key combo and had some negative issues with it. What degree was your key? Also, what were those issues and what is your current status using the cdi?

Im experiementing with a proto type dyna cdi "one that SgtRock and nyroc had" and 4 degree offset key. Im running straight 93 octane gas and it seems to be running fine. This proto type cdi has the kick back issue and Im using the pull rope. The P650 starts on the first pull everytime when warmed up. It has been starting every time on first pull when cold with the choke on also. This proto type cdi only has 31 degrees of advance and with my degree key gives me a total of 35 degrees. I havent had the chance to do any performance testing. I know seen very little difference when I ran this CDI before but I didnt have the degree key in either. I did see a 1-2 mph increase in top end though. Maybe this combo will help me break 50mph in roughly 350' and give a top end of 70.

BTW, the pull rope elimates any chance of kickback. Its easier to pull than you would think.

Hi KOD, the main issue is my machine is in the shop at 700 miles it is making a rattling noise and they don't know why.
They are going to go into it next week and nothing is under warranty because of mods.
They thought timing was off well its off 3-4 degrees advanced when checked with light. Took dg3 and dyna cdi off of course.
It sounds like crap when cold with rattle and knock. It gets better when engine warms up, the degree key is not enough to worry about they say, so I guess they are thinking a bent rod or something. I can say for sure this is going to cost a lot before its done.
I still have tons of power 57-60 mph in my drags of 300-330 feet with dg3 and or dyna cdi.
This is just a word of advice all this came on after I started running the 4 degree key and Dyna cdi combo.
It did not happen at first in fact it was a week later or so that the sounds appeared. I went the gas route and it would clear up and come back again.
That's why it has me and mechanic stumped. It comes and goes, but is here all the time now.
If you or anyone else has an Idea before we start tearing into motor?
We removed the drive train to take the trannny and clutch out and it was still there but not as loud.
Also adjusted valves only one was a little off.

I enjoyed talking with you Prairiewrench as usual. I will let you know for sure how the cdi+key works out.

minimus, thanks for the reply. Sorry to hear your P700 is in the shop. I hope its not related to the timing. My timing advance sounds like it is a lot less than yours was. The timing light, you said was at least 3+cdi 5+ key 4 for a total of 40 degrees of timing. Correct me if Im wrong on that.

How long "miles/hours" did it take for you to start hearing the rattle?

57 mph in 350' would be much much faster than me. Sorry I dont have any advice for you and your P700. If mine did the knocking I would at least take the heads off and see if I could spot anything unusual. You may spot the problem and be able to fix it yourself and save a lot of money. Keep me informed on how it turns out and what you find.

Prairiewrench said he is running 35 degrees advance timing with great results. Is anyone else running the Dyna CDI + degree key?

Unscrew the little cap on left side oil will mist and spurt out. Put timing light on, Had to put goggles on to look.
The timing is 3-4 degree advanced for sure with key. Running dyna it puts it 4 with key plus 33 and that is 37 degrees.
With dg3 it is just 4 degree advance 32 degrees. Dg3 does not advance timing.
If Prairiewrench is running at 37 and no problem great. That may not be the problem, I ran the crap out of Prairie doing all the test.
I ran about 20 drags 330-500 foot before problem came on.
I was showing off of course to some sport guys on a big sand hill. I went up to the base of a huge hill and just ate it up from a dead start.
They were impressed for sure because they were doing runs at it. Of coarse I could not stop at once I did it twice and I'm a 200 lb rider. Well when I got home is when I heard the noise.
That's when it all started.

Mine is at 35 degrees with the cdi Dyna made for me. I am not running any advance keys! The only problem I have with mine is holding on while trail riding and not wheelieing into trees! LOL!!! I doubt the timing you had with the cdi and key is the problem. I know Alltoys has told me he has pushed his up to 40 degrees! It sounds more like a valve train problem of even worse,, a rod bearing maybe! Check to make sure the rockers did not seize on the shafts, I've seen this happen a few times!

I also am running the 4 degree key and Dyna without any problems yet. Will be taking it racing next weekend.

minimums, I guess I missunderstood your first reply about the timing. The way I read it you checked the timing with the light "after" you removed the CDI. Thanks for straightening that up though.

cuda440, please keep me updated on how yours does. Did you notice much if any difference with both the cdi and key as opposed to just one of them?

KOD, Yea you are right the timing is 3 to 4 degrees advanced with light and at idle. 31 or 32 degrees is correct at idle.
My understanding the latest dyna cdi is 33 degrees when hooked up.
It thinks our machine is stock 28 degrees and if you have a key installed +4 degree key already, it actually will advance the machine 37 degrees.
I may be wrong on that but I think that is what it does. Since the DG3 does not advance timing all you get is 28 stock + 4 degree = 32 total.
All I did with timing light was see key was actually working.
