Whats a good battery for P650 with a Dyna CDI?
#1
On Sunday, I raced in another local XC race with my modded P650. While I can't complain about my 1st place finish (out of 4 in the utility class) or my 19th place finish overall (out of 40 quads in the race), I had problems starting it quickly and I got last in the holeshot (which meant that I had to pass everyone in my class to take the win). I have continued to have bad holeshots ever since I installed the Dyna CDI about 6 months ago...so I have to conclude that this Dyna CDI takes more power and makes it harder for my motor to fire up quickly. Don't get me wrong, I love the extra power/acceleration that I get from my Dyna CDI, but I need to find a way to make my motor start faster with the Dyna installed.
Does anyone have suggestions for a battery that has MORE JUICE (cold cranking amps) than the OEM battery on the P650/P700? Specifically, I am looking for a battery that fits in the existing battery tray (I do not want to modify or change the batterly location). Any thoughts?

Mikeyboy,
I notice the same thing with my dynatek cdi. I will be watching this post, as I too would like a better battery. Although, more for winching, as I am not racing and can always count on my rope starter for a back up.

What about the BF 750 battery? Does anyone know how many CCA it puts out? Is it the same CCA rating and size as the Prairie battery?

Thanx for looking that up. Does anyone know if there is a street MC battery that is similar in size to the Prairie's battery, but with more CCA? If so, that might work. Any ideas on how I can find such a MC battery?

UPDATE: An '03 P650 owner on another forum said that he installed a Deka battery which seems to help his motor turn over faster upon start-up. He told me who he bought his Deka battery from and then I spoke to this salesman. The battery salesman said that the Deka ETX14 (AGM) battery should fit my 03 P650. He quoted me a very reasonable price, but he also told me that it has 200 CCA...this is the same CCA rating as my stock (Yuasa) battery. However, he also said that Deka is well-known for being very conservative on their CCA ratings and its very possible that this particular battery has an actual CCA much higher than 200. I'm going to keep looking around...if I can't find anything else, I will probably order this Deka battery and see how it does.

2nd UPDATE:
Today, I ordered a new Deka (AGM) battery for my quad...its model #EXT14. It cost about $51 (plus shipping) and has the same CCA as the stock Yuasa battery. I'll report back after I install it and let everyone know how well it fits and performs.

**LATEST UPDATE**
The Deka battery arrived yesterday and I installed it last nite. Its a tad bit smaller than the stock Yausa battery, but fits perfectly inside the red (or green) plastic battery tray. I ended up putting a thin piece of wood (acts like a shim) between the battery and the black T shaped plastic strap that fastens down the battery...this wood piece took up the little bit of slack that existed with the Deka battery (remember that its a tad bit smaller) so that the battery stays put and doesn't slide around during my XC races. The shape of the positive and negative terminals on the battery were a little bit larger than the stock battery, so I had to bend 1 of the 3 metal tabs on the end of the battery wiring to make it fit...it was no big deal and I can always bend it back if I ever decide to put the stock battery back on.
TESTING:
I didn't have time to take it for a test drive and really test it out...but I did fire up the motor a few times and it seemed to start faster than before! I also activated my 3000lb winch and front head lights while the motor was running...but they both seemed to operate the same as my old stock battery (didn't notice any improvement on those items).
The real test for this battery will be this Sunday when I have another local XC race...I am hoping my motor will start a tad faster than it did with my old stock battery so that I will get a good holeshot off the line. I'll report back after my race.
