2000 Lakota Mods.?
#1
1st I must say I've looked and spoke to many people about my quad and NO ONE really knew much about it. I feel like I am in heaven since I have just stumbled across this sight! Anyway, I have a completely stock 2000 Lakota that I really love. I am lookin to get more power out of it. I have ordered and K&N/Dynojet power kit and a Supertrapp IDS2 Quiet series pipe for it. Neither is installed yet..BACKORDERED, both of them. My luck. No one can really tell me if I am going to notice a big diff. in the machine or a slight diff.. I have already removed the racks and installed a Mojave headlight. I left the 2 original headlights and ran tubed braces from the bumper to the front fenders. Looks really good and the additional light is awesome. I wouldn't mind getting new shocks but not sure who or where to look at improvements over stock. I hear a lot about the air box being very inferior. I am concerend about this because I know you typically need to open it up when the K&N is installed with a larger jetting in the carb. Any ideas what can be done or will I be okay leaving it just the way it is. I have also contemplated changing the gearing but once again unsure which way to go. Any info. or advice from anyone would be greatly appreciated.

As for the Lakota it is not easy to find high performance mods, and in your posting you asked way to many questions. I would be here all day answering them all. Feel free to ask me some specific questions, or e-mail me direct.

c'mon rideordie give me a break. I am looking to improve my quad. There are really 4 questions here:
1) Am I going to notice a large or small diff. in the filter, jet, and pipe.
2) Will I need to modify or change my air box. 3) After market shocks, worth it or not.
4) Gearing, leave as is or someone have a better combo.

Well Stebob, here are your answers....
1. You will notice a good difference in your mods, about 4 hp. If you just ride dirt it will come alive, if you ride sand, its hard to notice.
2. You should not need to mod your air box for stage 2 mods, your getting ahead of yourself.
-->For now I would take out that headlight, and you will want to shorten the snorkel about 3-4 inches. Currently the intake goes to a little rubber top that is mounted to your plastics so that no water gets in there... Remove that thing when you shorten the intake tube.
3.As for the shocks if you are getting fat air or riding a well set up track you might want to change the shocks. But it sounds to me like your just starting up and for the money I would wait till you are a real good rider. Also if you have not changed the tires that is a MUST, and that will inturn change the handling alot. Go with XCT Holeshots..
4. The gearing is simple with the mods you have, the Lakota has ALOT of torgue because it is part utility so if you are always on dirt you need to go up 1 tooth on the front.
Any other questions and I would be glad to help you, I figure I went through the hell of doing all the stuff your trying, so why not help someone else.

thanks ride. by the way I ride a good mixture of terain. Dirt, gravel, and sand dunes. Would you still recommend 1 tooth up in the front. Why shorten the snorkel? Will this allow much more ait to get in? Also, why do you recommend removing the headlight? I ride at night too. It makes a huge diff. Thanks again.

Well Ste I shortened the Snorkel and took out the headlight cover to make almost a Ram air effect, if you ride at night alot this would not be the answer for you. This mod probably only benifits my quad at high speeds, but for the thump I am in the process of putting 10, 1 inch uni foam air breathers in the air box lid so that my carb can even get more air. As for the 14t Gear I would recommend it if you are riding some long fast fire roads or anything were Top Speed comes into play, but for track and sand dont touch that gear.

So ride....since I need to keep the headlight should I still shorten the snorkel? I did trim the rubber piece attached to the cowl but did not remove it. Do you think I should just remove that and leave the snorkel alone?
I think I have determined what I want to do for now. In addition to the power kit and pipe, I want to possible put Douglas alum. rims on it to save weight. I saw that you put the Durablue wheel spacers on yours. Did you notice a difference? Did you put on the graph. lite or the ez series. Would you recommend these? I looked at the tires you recommended also. Are these a good overall tire? I was wondering how they would do in the mud and snow when compared to the stock goodyears. Thanks alot for your info. ride.

Bob,
To tell you the truth I just called Denis Kirk and said I need the jet kit for a 99 Lakota. They sent me a jet kit and I went w/ the biggest jet a 138. That jet was actually putting just a hair to much fuel so if you are at about see level and you run the spark arrestor on your bike you would probably run the 134. And by the way forget that back order garbage, there are so many dealers where you can get that pipe and that jet kit, call and find a place that has it in stock.
Any Questions Feel free to ask,,
