Hydro locked , gas in crank, on a p650 im lookin to buy - suggestions please
#1
Went and looked at a guy I knows P650 tonight. It was hydro locked, there was also gas in the crank. He said its done this since new like 4 times. The quad is a 2003 P650 and has 40 hours 120 miles.
So is this a big issue? Has anytihing been harmed?
If I go into the carbs, what is the correct float height? Anyone have the service manual pages for the stock settings?
03 P650
40 hours 120 miles
warn 60" blade with electric lift
Thoughts on this deal.
Thanks

I read the deal on keeping more fuel in the quad. This thing would really suck though in a weekend ride situation where you need to change oil. Is there a fix for this other than keeping more fuel in the tank?

did you search for more threads here? There is tons of good info, I cant tell you everything. But you can do a tank breather mod, put in a better spring on the carb plunger. If its locked now, you need to change the oil for sure.

Yes I saw those, Im uncertain how the guy is doing that breather mod. Being in somwhat unfamilair territory a picture would have been worth a million words.

"No more check valve, the only problem is you will have to wait longer for the fuel pump to put fuel pressure to the carbs if you have been sitting for a while. I also put in a vent line snaking it around the fram with it ending near the top of the jockey box under the seat. The result is no more pressurized fuel tank no more fuel in the oil no more over fueling the carbs." I recommend that anyone that rides mud a lot should run the vent hose up to the handlebars where the rest of the vents run. You might also consider just placing a cheap fuel filter on the end of the vent hose to keep mud out instead of running the hose to the front.

The spring pluger replacement didnt say what problem it solved?
Im familiar with info boards and did use the search, I do appreciate the help.

Plainsman, No Big deal. IF, thye guy/gal has not been riding the machine with the gas in the oil. Thin Oil will quickly seize your engine. Remove your plugs, drain the oil, turn it over a few times to clear the cylinders of oil, Change the Oil and filter, & do a compression check to ensure you havent bent any valves trying to start it, change or clean your plugs, turn on the key and gas and fire it up. Run it and check your oil, do not overfill.
DO NOT LEAVE THE FUEL PETCOCK IN THE ON POSITION AFTER YOU TURN OFF THE ENGINE AND OR WHILE TRANSPORTING QUAD. Prairies have been known to Hydrolock if you leave the fuel petcock in the run position. Just make a habit to turn off gas after use Or when parking.

I really appreciate the response; but the fact you have to turn off the fuel is lame. Seems like somthing is designed poorly if thats the case. What will happen here is youll be 100 miles from home @ -10 and youll be locked because you forgot to turn off the fuel.
Would jetting this hae a good effect? Where the heck can I find the specs for the floats, Im guessing that could be the issue. I have a KFX service manual in pdf, but not a Praire, anyone know where to dig one of these up electronicly. I love the fact you can do searches insead of digging though a book.
Thanks again guys.

i've never heard of shutting off the gas all of the time. to transport, yes, but i always forget and still havnt had anything happen. ive never heard od anything like this with prairie 650s. i turn the gas off if i stand it up to clean it but thats it. oh we turn off the gas on our friends quads when they are not looking and they stall in the middle of the trail and they sit there scratching their head going" what the hell?" its the funniest thing.

Weak choke plunger springs may be the culprit. 02's were notorious for having weak springs. Kawi made new plungers & Springs for 02 replacements. Visit Nyrocs Website for P/N & Instructions.
Several people have found out the hard way especially when transporting your quad to turn off petcocks. Your choice.
