Is a Prairie Gas Tank Vented?

It's a good habit anyway, for a few reasons,
1. Your bike stock is pressurized and it will leak by if you don't shut off the petcock when stored.
2. When transporting your carb it will allow fuel by, shutting it off gets you in the habit. All quads can do this I'm told.
3. If somebody tries to steal your quad you might catch them if they are in too much of a hurry and don't know you have the gas shut off.
It's just a good habit to get into,

From everything I know the tank is not supposed to be pressurized (stealer said nothing of this), otherwise why would there be a check valve. The difference between a check valve and a simple fuel filter is that the filter would allow crap to go upstream. For now, Im going to just blop a fuel filter in the back.
I tested my petcock and that is working to seal off the fuel when off.
It does make me laugh that this is a problem from 01-05

Sorry mastrblastr, no disrespect intended but,
Yours might not be pressurized now that you took out what you call ( the vent valve thingy) but they are pressurized when stock. Why else would they push gas past the carbs?
According to my dealer, which I just phoned to make sure of, they are Pressurized by a couple pounds. Mine is pressurized and has worked perfect for more than the miles you see below. No problem at all.
The brute has an automatic shutoff because of this, the tank is pressurized, people won't turn off their petcocks from the knowledge Kawi has gained from Prairie owners. So now it's automatically done.
The valve must have a a pressure release.

mastrblastr.
your right i road the 700 yesterday for a few hours and then i got on the honda and it felt like i could get of and run faster.
lol.
but it still gos good i just had to push it a little harder to keep up with the big boys.
i still love my honda but im also likeing the kawi.
the one thing i liked on the better right away is its not as wide as the kawi.
on the honda its not as wide where the tank is so my legs are not that far apart.
on the kawi my legs are way ferther apart then on the honda.
and im not used to that.
yet.
the honda gos good just not as good as the kawi.
and you know somthing i dident think there was that much of a differance in power untill i road one.

Hi Guys
I'm in the process of removing the rear storage box and replacing it with a large stainless steel Battery box and a 32AH Gel deep cycle battery ...very cool . But I also have a delemma , I have the little vent canester and check valve ...I have to make a new mount or just re-route it to the handle bar area ...It's sitting pretty low where it gose into the frame , I'm most likelly going to run it up to the bars .
Has anyone done this ...my only concern would be a gas smell , or maybe move the little unit to the front ?
Thanks Guys

Here is what I did tonight.
http://wah.midco.net/rhoffman/vent.JPG
Started it this evening, first start since I bought it, man are these things cold blooded. I just got done putting in new plugs and adjusting the air screws 2.5 turns. Still a bugger to get going.

Plainsman, good idea. That looks like it will work real good. You did make sure that little tube going into the frame wasn't blocked didn't you?LOL! Thats a way better setup IMO than the stock setup. No pressure in that tank now is there?
DOA, no disrespect to you, but what is the point of having pressure in the fuel tank? There isn't any. The stealer you talked to is FOS and he is giving you bad information. If there is supposed to be pressure in the tank, why does my quad run just as good now as it did when it wasn't venting properly (except now I don't have to worry about my oil becoming gas saturated?) If you don't believe me, take your fuel cap off and go for a short rip. It'll run just as good and there are no worries about hydrlocking or fuel being rammed through the carbs and into your oil. The fuel tank breather and the check valve are bad juju but a little $5 fix like plainsman did will save you a lot of grief and money in the long run. On top of the hydrolocking problem that this vent system is creating, it also creates long term problems as the fuel being rammed into your cylinders washes the cylinder walls free of oil. When you start er up----there goes 3 months of engine life span. I'm not ragging on you, but when a dealer gives a guy bad info like that, it just sticks in my craw.

What $5, no way it was $2.25! $1.99 for that filter was kind of steep, I was hoping <$1.
Dude, after I took the pic the, idea that the back line could be plugged dawned on me but I had to head into the house. Now if I go back out there tomorrow and there is a spec of dirt in the back will I be pised for wasting that $2 and an hour of time. I really think its cool now though as when you spin the cap off there is no hiss.
DOA, my dealer said on a properly functioning check valve you should be able to blow though it (not pressurized), thats why im screwing with this crap in the frist place. Sounds like we need to take my dealer and your dealer and put them in a cage to see whos correct.

mastrblastr, I never said that running your vent line wouldn't stop the pressure, newbettle already said he did his with no problems at all in this thread.
I am just saying the tanks are pressurized from stock, stock design. I am not sure why they did this but I presume there is a reason or why would they? I will phone the kawi machanic Mon. to get the real lowdown hopefully.
Maybe you can tell me why they put an automatic shutoff on the Brute, I would say it is beacuse of the pressurized tank also. The tanks you say are not suppose to be pressurized. It must have something to do with the fuel pump? I wonder if you do get more snap for your buck if it's pressurized, by adding oxygen to your fuel? Oxidation??? I know I get close, very close to the same milage as a Rubicon, on a tank I only need two cups more and that's it, sometimes only one. I am super happy with my fuel milage. I got better than a 400 Kodiak which seemed hard on gas.
If you ask me you are messing with a system that needs no messing with but that's your choice. No need for the rest to think they have too though, when they don't.
I just would hate to see people ripping off their stock setup thinking there is something wrong when they hear pressure when removing the gas cap, when it is perfectly normal. I play in the mud BIG TIME too, have to flush the top of the tank after every ride from the gunk that gets up there but even with this I have had ZERO problems with my pressurized tank. I do shut off my petcock when stored and transported though.
I think my dealer is right on the money, he is half owner and machanic and seems to know his stuff, I trust him completely. If I am wrong I will tell you if found out, I want people to know the truth as my sig says.
How about that oxidation theory, anyone?
The reason is what I would like to know,

Just my 2 pennies, but it seems to me that with an electric fuel pump in the tank, the stock "vent" check valve is designed to let air into the tank, not out, otherwise the tank would build up a vacuum. Therefore, there will be times that the tank will have pressure in it, but not necessarily because its designed to be pressured up to run. The best way to avoid pressure when sitting is to keep the tank full when parked, same as how a jerry can won't pressure up as much when full.
As to the vent, in stock form, when it vents into the frame, at the front of the frame, there is another vent tube to the bars with all the rest of the tubes.
