2005 Brute Force 650 problems...anyone know of this?
#1
Someone posted this on another forum. I just thought I'd share this with everyone:
Anyone know anything about this?
I personally haven't had any problems whatsoever with my BF650. Mines a month old with about 130 hard miles on it and I'm loving it.
If your 2wd 4wd light flashes and it wont shift into 4wd you need to replace the actuator. ALSO this is a must, the wiring runs from the coupling to the computer. in the middle under the center fender it runs through the thermostat housing. The vibrations of running it cause the wire to expose and cut burning out the actuator. the wire must be rerouted around the housing instead of through it. Take it to the dealer and let him know, kawasaki knows of the problem but wont recall. Almost of of the 05 brutes have this prob. It might not affect you now, but it will. Hopefully before the warranty runs out. In order to save you time at the shop for repairs make sure you get it looked at. It is a free service if you have the warranty. Naults in windham has done mine unfortunately to late, it took them 1 week to figure this out. Ask for ronnie at the desk, he is familar with the situation. Also in regards to the belt light, some of you have. they oil line inside the belt housing has a weak coupling causing tiny amounts of oil to leak onto the belt, you need to have it changed or the belt will wear and you will be walking. they took mine apart to find small amount of oil in there, mind you my 650 brute is 2 weeks old. happy trails and good luck, any questions and private message me i will be happy to help, if you decide to go to naults tell them JR sent you.

The "quote" has some assumption and/or errors that need to be pointed out so that BF owners do not get confused in my opinion:
1). "2wd 4wd light flashes and it wont shift into 4wd you need to replace the actuator"
When it flashes, it means any of following can be bad:
a. 4WD actuator, b. EBC actuator, c. Control unit, d. any combination of actuator and control unit, e. Wiring harness, or f. 10 amp fuse for Control unit.
2). "wiring runs from the coupling to the computer. in the middle under the center fender it runs through the thermostat housing"
There is a joint connector (white flat plastic capsule) under the rear fender right side of the fuel tank and it can short due to the internal corrosion. This is the biggest wiring problem on '05 BF (750) than anything else and very common.
3). "kawasaki knows of the problem but wont recall"
When a manufacturer does a RECALL, the problem has to be safety related that can cause either bodily injury or death, not just any common problem.
4). "oil line inside the belt housing has a weak coupling causing tiny amounts of oil to leak onto the belt"
If you find oil inside the CVT belt housing, check crank seal, transmission outputshaft seal, and oil pipe O-Rings (2, one on top and another at bottom).
I guess the original author was trying to help others (which we all should appreciate), but needs to guide to the right direction.

What about the 650sra?
What about the 650sra?

SRA models do not have such connectors (2 in IRS) and no need to worry about this problem. SRA seems to be much more reliable than IRS in other areas as well (as far as Kawi is concerned). And a lot more fun to ride - awesome power sliding!
