Default P700 loosing oil

I have been adding on the average a half of a qt. of oil per trip. My'04 P700 has 4400 kms ( 1800 miles approx I think) on it. The average trip for me would be about 40 miles or so. I have asked my buddies to see if I am smoking, but they don't see anything. The bike is parked in the garage between trips and I do not see any drips. I am taking the bike in to the shop next week for a little work on the carbs and get the swingarm bearings taken out , cleaned and repacked. I have the 3 yr warranty on the 700, so I don't think that I should be too worried. The bike works the very best performance wise and I don't see any lack of power. The carbs are a bit out of tune, but I hope the trip to the shop next week will take care of that. Good luck with your problem, hope it is not serious.

I've read on the forums thatsome of the v-twins are more effective with oil consuption if you run them a little low on oil.Try seeing if the p700 doesn't loose any more oil on a second ride...what I'm trying to say is maybe it will balance out and stop loosing oil when the crankcase pressures are more happy?
I have had a little problem with this after I turned my p650 into a submerine one day.Check your airbox for eccessive oil at the breather vent.Goodluck, just a couple thoughts i had.M/M.

Thank you for the tip. I did check the airbox and there is no sign of oil there. I will check to see what the oil level is before I head out this weekend. I will take oil with me in case. Thanks again, I hope you have the answer

bonez,

You really need to find where the oil is going before you can address the problem. It can't dissappear into nothing. If you're burning it and no one behind you can see blue smoke wipe your finger inside your exhaust pipe to see if there is any residue there. Look very carefully at your skid plates to see if oil is leaking out of your engine any where. Look at your crankcase breather hose to see if it's being over filled. Change your oil and use a 20-50wt if your outside ambient air temp will allow it. Only put in the recommended amount and look at your dipstick to see if it's correct. Some quad models will have you screw your dip stick in and some will have the oil checked by placing the dip stick on top of the threads. Make sure you are checking it correctly.

It was not leaking. I think it was getting by the rings because it was thinned out by gas getting through into crank case.

bonez, you have brought up a whole new issue.Does your oil smell like gas? Then you may have the gas tank venting issue which is too much pressure in your gas tank thus forcing fuel past the carbs into oil...that would definately consume oil more. The one thing that I have read is to make sure to shut fuel off atfter riding...There is a vent tube of the gas tank that head towards streering knuckle and somewheres in it is a check valve...Quick easy test is to put an inline fuel filter in where the check valve goes. This should correct too much pressure in gas tank.Hope this help you in your quest.M/M.

I had a 04 Praire 700 and after breakin I put in the Amsoil 0W-40. I had 1300 miles on it and 200 hours and it did't burn a drop of oil. I always ran my oil in the middle of the low and high mark. What kind of oil do you use? 4400 km is about 2750 miles.

I use the Kawasaki 10 w 40 that I buy from the dealer. I am going to try the next trip to see if the level goes down any further. I am hoping that it will remain at its present level.
