Default Getting a 650 Prairie on Par With 700

Will a Dyna ignition do it vs. a stock 700? If not just this, what else on top of that? Also, what is the best primary spring for quick-paced trail riding, but certainly NOT full-blown drags? I'm revisiting all these old questions because the Rubi is on the "trading block" and will be selling a few more odds and ends in an attempt to finally gain ownership of an old school 650 Prairie which I've been aiming at doing seeminly forever. Rode the 700, loved it, and would really like to get the same amount of power out of the 650, or at least "feel" as though it has the same power (actual hp could be lower).

You ask me there is a night and day difference from the 650 - 700 I own a 700 and also owned a 650. The 700 has a lot more power. I did a little bit of stuff to the 650 but still did not have the power the stock 700 did. good luck

Red Goblin,
I can't say what it takes to equal the power of the P700, but in any case I think you can't go wrong to buy a cheap P650 and add some mods to it (like I recently did). The #1 bang for your buck is the Dyna CDI. Its a must have. That alone will make your take-offs from a dead stop equal or exceed a fully stock P700 in addition to increasing your top-speed by 3mph or so...but you won't stay ahead of the P700 for long if that's the only mod you have. You should also do the top-speed primary clutch mod if you do any hi speed riding...it added 3 mph to my top speed. I find that primary springs are something of a thing of preference...I don't like high stall springs which are usually great for the drag strip...instead I find that no stall springs are my cup of tea...the best one I've tried is the EPI Maroon spring...it keeps the revs up where the power is. There are many other mods available, just look at my sig for ideas. The mod that I like best for XC racing (non-muddy races) is the 22" wheels...it lowers the center of gravity and helps you keep up with the sport quads in the tight woods/tight turns!

Good luck and happy trails...

How do the Prairie 700 and Dalton Plain/White springs compare to the EPI Maroon? Also, are these springs going to cause slightly more belt wear then the stock primary?

I've tried all 3 of those springs. I personally don't like springs with a stall effect (like the Dalton P/W). Some folks do like it tho and its supposed to improve your drag race performance.

I like the EPI Maroon better than the P700 spring b/c it has higher full shift-out pressure...basically, it makes the motor rev higher at all times so that you are in the meat the powerband at all times. The P700 is my 2nd favorite primary spring, but I have no reason to use it any more now that I found the Maroon.

PS - I have not heard any reports that these springs will wear out the belt or clutches. However, I've heard speculation that all hi stall primary springs (like Dalton P/W, EPI Red, Dalton O/B, etc.) may be harder on the belt/clutches b/c of the sudden engagement, which makes sense to me...but I haven't seen any reports of this actually happening.

Happy trails...

So does the maroon increase acceleration at least somewhat or why do you prefer it over stock?

Dyna CDI, Lighest 25" tires you can find (stock, mudlights, or 489stires), 700 belt, Web or Fundy Cams (ensure they are degreed in to specs), Supertrapp IDS, Orange Blue primary, 700 Secondary, topend clutch mod, Twin Air Filter/03 Airbox mod , proper jet and tune jet & tune & go spank a 700.

If you want More HP Get you set of 700 Sleeves, Install and bore out to bring your cc to 697 and add port and polish from Fundy. Combo making in excess of 75HP. A Stock Brute 750 makes approximately 50.2 HP & 700 makes 47HP & 650 makes 42HP

You can also add a Stroker kit to take it all tha way to 850CCs. Depends on Your $$$$ & ambition.

I've also owned both. The difference in power stock versus stock is plainly put, fairly substantial. In a drag the P700 will kill it. Having said that, both are about as much fun on a utility quad as your going to get so both, in my opinion, are EXCELLENT choices. P650's are still, after all the others that have come along that are bigger, one of of the very best quads ever.

Redgoblin,
Yes, my seat of the pants meter says that the EPI Maroon gives it slightly more power/acceleration, especially in the low to mid range when I come out of a tight corner in the woods and nail the throttle...you can easily tell that the motor is revving higher with the EPI Maroon (thanx to its higher shift-out pressure) and that seems to help the motor power out of the turns better than the P700 stock spring...likewise, the P700 stock spring has more shift out pressure than the P650 stock spring and that's why I like the P700 stock spring over the P650 stock spring. The P700 stock spring and P650 stock springs don't keep the revs up, so your motor is lugging along when you nail the throttle to come out of a turn. Try it out and you will see what I'm talking about...only cost about 20 bucks...cheap mod!

Happy trails...
