I have heard rumors of people drilling exhausts for better sound, has anyone tried it?

I bought a stock exhaust system off of Ebay a few months ago. I cut it apart to see what makes it tick. The can is totally junk. It is a reverse flow system. Which means that the exhaust comes about 1/2 way down the can and hits a wall. It then makes a 180 degree turn and comes back to the inlet of the muff. It then runs down a pipe and comes out some holes drilled in that pipe.
This thing is SUPER restrictive!!!!!!!!!!
When I get a chance I will gut the can and start over with a baffle type system not unlike the flowmaster muff.
In short, the stock muff is junk IMHO.
I don't know what you mean by drilling holes in the can but anything will be better than stock.

You can drill it but it will not sound better, more twangy and louder is all. Simply causing more people to hate ATV's.

I like the reverse flow aspect, if you go into water at all or cross water it will help keep the water out. Now I know why my bike will start under water if it stalls and not suck in water and ruin my engine (like some others).

My engine is more important than 2 horse power.

My buddy drilled his and I have no desire to follow him on the trail at all, obnoxious, he never gained any power that I can notice either, just noise. Mine sounds cool with the low rumble, his is loud and obnoxious(with no water protection).

You will find that all stock exhaust have the reverse flow inside them. this is how the manufactors make them quiet. It rob alot of power.
