tecate-3
#1
I havea chance to get a tecate 3 for little to no cost to me initally. The guy got it cheap to turn into a 4-wheeler but then ran out of time and now just wants it out of his garage. The bottom end of the engine is fine, but the top end needs rebuilt. Should i jump on it, and if i do get it, what do i need to pay attention to???

What year model is it? If its the 86-87 model, you got an awesome machine (collectors item) thats worth fixing. If its the 84-85, I'd still get it if it's cheap. As said earlier, you will have to sleeve the cylinder, or buy a new cylinder to fix the topend. Tecate cylinders were elctro fused and cannot be bored or honed. It will be expensive, but I can guarantee that no matter which model, you'll be one of the fastest , if not the fastest ATV at any trail you go to. Also you can use the 83-84 KX 250 Motocross engine in the 84 -85 Tecate. For the 86-87 Tecate you can use the 86-89 KX 250 engine. You can swap cylinders for sure. You may be able to easily swap the whole engine I beleive they will bolt right in and you won't need a custom pipe built. on the 86-87 KXT, you can then benefit from the 6 speed tranny the later model KX motors had. It would be an extensive mod to try to put an 86-87 Tecate or 86-89 KX engine into the 84-85 Tecate or vise versa. The two different 3 wheeler designs are as different as night and day.
Grab it, get it running, and start killin banshee's with a 13-16 year old ATV...he he.
My Tecates are like my kids...somethings you just never sell....lol
