CHEAP MODS

I would suggest drilling a few holes in the stock airbox and adding a replacement K&N filter. After this you might also want to rejett your carb. You will also see a difference in performance if you experiment with front sprocket size.
For torque acceleration go down one or two teeth. For more top end speed go up a tooth or two.The front sprocktes are fairly cheap so you can afford to buy a few different ones and play around with them.
A good set of tires suited to the type of riding and terrain that you ride on will also make your Lakota much more fun to ride, but tires get expensive and really don't give you more power. They make it easier to use and control the power that you have.

I have a 1999 Lakota, going down a tooth on the front spocket was a waste of 15 dollars. It had more torque but top out way to soon. Went back to the stock front sprocket. I am fixing to go up one tooth now. Since i have done my mods i know it needs on more tooth for the longer open areas.Right now it revs way to high at top speed seems like it could come unwound at any time. I am going up one tooth manly to stay in the top of the rev range in 3rd gear on some of my trails.

I guess this isn't so cheap, but SuperTrapp makes a 4 in. racing series pipe for about $230.00. I put this on before any of my other mods and it made a big difference. I think it's worth it. I currently run it with about 8 discs. It's pretty loud though. They make another series that isn't quite as loud.
Good luck.

I also have a '00 Lakota. I have put a 134 main jet on along with a k&n filter and a quiet series supetrapp exhaust. I have 8 disks in the exhaust but it is not too loud. Louder than stock though. Sounds really cool. Be carefull drilling holes in your air box if you ride in any water. I left mine alone. I did however trim the rubber piece in the top of the cowl so not to restrict as much air intake. These mods really made quit a difference. I can lean back a little on the seat give a slight tug and ride a wheelie as long as I want. It wouldn't lift the front wheels but maybe and inch or two before. Oh, the cost of the mods ran me about $320. I went with Rocky Mountain ATV. Great prices and good to work with. Supertrapp is also an awesome company to deal with if you encounter any probs.
Hey 14mins, let me know how going up 1 tooth in the front does for you. I was thinking of doing the same thing. I also thought about dropping 1 in the front but after what you said I'm not sure. Let me know how much it hurts you on low end and take off
HAVE FUN!

STEBOB; It will probably be a month before i change front spockets, have to much work to do. It been raining cats and dogs for the last 2 weeks in Aledo tx. When i went to the smaller(one tooth down) my lakota rapped out way to fast. With my mods i don't have any problems popping wheelies. My quad with stock gearing still wants to rev on top(i guess there is no limiter). The main reason i want to change is not for top end espically but for 2 and 3rd gear on some of my trails. Right now i ride it real hard in 2nd gear and change to 3rd revs drop a little to low to spin the tires real good. I think the new front spocket will allow me to stay in second on some sections of my trails. I have no way at this moment to know my top speed, but i did pass my friend on the road in front of my house and could read the ditigal speedo. and it said 57. Not much left at that point but the lakota motor was screaming. I am still on the original tires, chain, brakes. They are about due for change now. I have still not located a 10-1 piston yet. If i don't find one, i am going to have the head milled when i do the brakes.
