Default Diff lock not engaging.

Diff lock not working properly, on and off when it wants to, worked well tonight enough to get 1/2 mile down the snowmobile trail, would not work on the way back. Had to winch the bike on top of the trail and walk it out, kept breaking through the snow with me on it and only 3 wheels turning. Searched the forum and found that the likely problem is low oil level. I tore an upper boot last weekend and lost some oil while changing it out. I will top it up and give it a try. This is an awesome forum, I have always found references to my problems. THANKS GUYS.

If the oil level is not the issue... two things I can think of... the first is you are running the wrong oil in the diff. more than Likely your gear adjuster down by the diff has too much snow and ice where the cable can not move, all you wiil do is stretch your cable.

It is possible that i did stretch the cable the last time i was out, it was really wet and sloppy and the atv was encased in ice and snow. You don't think it has anything to do with clutch internally?

no as long as you have oil in your diff it should be alright. the easiest way to check cable is to raise the front of bike in 4x4 mode shut bike off, and mannually move the gear adjuster down by the diff, be careful not to pinch the cable. If a tire spin then you need to look some wheres else. if they don't you need adjustments to your cable. The sloppier it is the easier on diff it's hard on the dif if you have the diff ingaged and the tires can not spin. Once the cable is stretched it shouldn't stretch again.

Cable could just be out of adjustment... pretty easy to tighten up just take off the handle bar cover and you'll see it. I've had to tighten mine up myself.
