How often do you clean out the radiator fins? Even if you are riding on a dry, dusty day all it takes is a couple of splashes through a puddle or stream followed by some dust on the trail and the radiator looses much of it's cooling ability. It doesn't happen as much when you are going through lots of water as the radiator can get cleaned out. I've been in some riding conditions (hot, dry, dusty with some puddles) where all the liquid cooled machines overheated and all the air cooled ones ran fine.

yes you can cut up an old tube and cover the bottom of inner fenders which will keep your rad cleaner. Also you might find you could have a bad rad cap. Also make sure you clean rad from behind out the front. If you have a hot rad mud will just cake on it.

I clean it before we go, then if it starts overheating we try to clean it out in a nearby creek or the campground we stay at will let us use their garden hose.

Mine is wrost on dusty days especially if I follow a group of riders. The dust seems to really cake up good in there. Creeks work good but must be clean water not another mud hole. I carry a small container that can be pumped up. Like a small yard sprayer for weed killer. I carry either water or bug wash (in winter so as not to freeze) and if it starts to overheat I can spray the radiator with it. The next creek I come to I can refill the sprayer. I have only used about 2 times on my P650 and once on a honda rincon.

I have the same overheating problem on my 700. Especially on Poker Runs, you get a large number of bikes going through the same water holes and mud bogs it makes the liquid go into a real fine mud-water mix.

I ordered a radiator wash kit from High Lifter. It is $70 cdn. It consist of a marine bilge pump that is powered by the bike's 12v. assesory plug. It has some clear plastic hose and fittings that go on the end of the hose that will create pressure like your garden hose. The pump has a filter ( very easy to remove for cleaning ) on the bottom of it so that you can put it in a stream or water source.

I have not needed mine yet, but I have seen them work in runs that I have been in. Well worth the money on a hot day with antifreeze pissing out and a ways to go to your truck.
