Default Help please - wiring overheating

I would really appreciate help with this problem -- 'cos we are not too good with Kawa electrics -----
We have two machines with the same problem : an '89/'90?KLF300 Black and a '94/'95? Red Bayou.
Both are overheating the wires from the magneto/generator

Both had the wrong batteries in..we changed them
We changed rectifiers/regulators also -- with no luck

As soon as there are a few revs above tick-over then the wires from the generator overheat and blow the fuse.

Anyone come across this before?
Is there a short in the magneto itself?

(p.s. I am away for 2 days)
