They merged to help each other out. By cooperating both companies were able to field a broader and more comprehensive product line while retiring some of the older, outdated models. This also probably freed up resources to revamp and/or create other models. Now after the deal is over, both companies still have better product lineups than before.
Suzuki owns a fairly large share of AC, so that relationship is not quite the same.

To make more $ - as simple as that - by having more variety of products to sell. This has been happening since late 70's in auto industry as early as I know. Some are just engine/trans swap, and others are a completely same vehicle with just different badge.
Just to name a few:
Ford Courier with Mazda 2.0L and Chevy LUV with Toyota 22R mini pick ups. Then again in 80's Ford Probe/Mazda 626, Chevy Nova/Toyota 1.6L, Hyundai Excel with Mitsui's 1.5L, Ford Escort GT with Mazda 323 GT, Pontiac Racer with Korean made engine, Dodge Caravan with Mitsu 2.6L/3.0L, Chevy/Geo Sprint/Metro with Suzuki 3 -cyl 1.1?L, Ford Taurus H.O. with Yamaha 3.0L V6. In 90's, Mercury Villager with Nissan 3.0L V6, etc. Now, Mitsu's redesigned Raider truck is using Dodge's OHC 4.7L V8, Mazda's SUV is using Ford's V6 engine, etc...
Even my John Deer lawn mower has a Kawi engine!
