Mojo Owners

I have just picked up a 87 mojave for a song and dance. I have a few questions, like are they nitorious for any faults I should watch for. What type of fluids is everyone using. I like to technical trail ride here in michigan. I have property by one of the most technical in the l.p., (Tomahawks) I enjoy riding these trails. Everything I can find on this fine machine points to it being a great trail machine. I am not into if for the speed, but I want to be able to move on the trail and climb some very large sand hills. Such as one hill Bull Gap I am probably going to try and climb in a couple of weeks. Any information or links is greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Do a search for Mojave and you'll get a lot of good info. I liked the '01 I had. I installed a Dynojet kit and a 1 tooth taller front sprocket for better mid range and top end performance. I sold it to my brother and he installed an Supertrapp ISDE quiet exhaust, it sounds good and made a difference with the power. The stock exhaust kind of strangled it. It now revs more freely and makes a noticable difference in power and response. I was more impressed than I thought I'd be. I like the Mojave when I had it. I always thought they were better performing quads than the 250x/300ex.

check out cycleworksracing.net for big bore kits cams, other internal engine mods and carbs. i would reccomend a big gun pipe, 36mm mikuni round slide, twin air filter and remove the snorkel for some good power gains. for fluids i like engine ice coolant, amsoil 20-50 motorcycle oil, maxima blue label chain lube and twin air filter oil and cleaner........

Thanks for the great information. I am picking it up this saturday morning, I need to replace the 21 tooth gear for the kick starter and change fluids. Would you happen to know what amounts of fluids need to go in so I dont over fill. I am going to pick up a repair manual for it soon, but I just got back to work. I could pass the quad up for $300 I think I will enjoy it on the trails.

there is an oil glass on the bottom of the clutch cover by the brake pedal.....when that is just about full with a small bubble on the top then you have the right ammount of oil........im pritty sure its 2 quarts but im not positive

It is right at two quarts of Oil.
FYI--the mojo is a great technical trail machine. short wheel base, decent suspsion, and even stock it has real good power, I think you will like it. On some real tight trails I was able to dust a 660 raptor, once we hit a small open area he passed me like Iwas on jacks, but I was able to catch him in the woods again.
And I have yet to find a hill that the mojo had problems with.
The only major complaint I have is it will kick into reverse with out using the revers **** if the calbe is bound up in its sheath or if the reverse mechanism is dirty. Both are easy fixes.

weaknesses: kicker gears, sticking reverse button causing tranny problems(keep clean and oiled),soft intake valves sucking into head(if it keeps losing valve clearance the valve is working its way into the head),cam chain tensioner, decompression lobe on cam. strengths: high revin little motor, liquid cooling and 4 valve design enable big power increases, nimble woods bike. they can be a little money pit! mine is quick as he11 !!

Well the kick starter gear 21 tooth is missing a couple of teeth. I have that on order. I am picking it up tommorrow morning and bringing my new baby home. I am hoping to change fluids and take it too St. Helens trails next saturday here in michigan. I will be runnin with a quadzilla, but I am not worried I will keep up in the woods section it sounds like. Plus this spring I will be moddin it a bit with 36mm carb, Big Gun exhaust. and possible a +2 swingarm to help the hill climbs. Plus we will be changing all he cosmetics, custom tail light. I will have to see how the leds will work with this machine. I also am looking at some beadlock colored rims. Since I like to do alot trail riding.
