Default KFX700 top end noise..

04 KFX700 doesn't have 40 hours on it.
when we were in waynoka it started a very faint tick, got home and played with it the tick is now a light tap when hot.
the noise is coming form the top part of the rear cylinder, so i just ran the valves. took the cover off, the valves had 0 clearance. i put the recomended clearance in them, triple checked them and put the covers back on and started the bike.
now you can faintly here the rockers ticking (couldn't before), and the "tap" is still there.

what did i do wrong?
next step take that valve cover off and look for stuff wrong?
is there anything "tipical" that makes noise on these bikes?

thanks john

Three things to check:

1). Check the cam lobes and rocker arm surfaces for any obvious wear.

2). Check the cam chain tensioner if it is maxed out or not.

3). If you have been running the quads with zero valve clearance for some time, sorry to say but there is a chance that valves might have already digged into the valve seat of the cylinder head needing a 3-angle valve job or a new head depending on the severity.
