It all depends on what kind of a jump.If its somthing with a long run, but not really long enough to open it up all the way, I would say get to 4th then as soon as you get to the jump and are about to hit it jam up to 5th.If its one witha long enough run to beable to open it up all the way just hit be in 5th and hit the jump.If its one with no run hardly be in about 2nd and then when you go to hit the jump , go into 3rd.

If you need to ask how to jump a quad, save yourself some pain and don't jump anything faster than 2nd or 3rd gear until you get used to doing it.

Try to stay in the power band no matter what gear, then gas it just before take-off to throw the quad up and over.

Get a good running start and try not to catch your feet on the handlebars. I personally find it easier to jump over the quad sideways than to try to jump over the machine front to back. Also use a small machine like a TRX 90 or a blaster. I don't care what they tell you a Sportsman 500 is a bitch to jump over. It's too high!! I know all the Polaris owners will now post responses, but I think the Sportsman is not a good jumping quad, unless you are Marion Jones or Michael Johnson.

I would not recommend jumping any quad in fifth gear. Not without alot of practice. Especially one with such a small wheelbase.
Are you riding in the dunes and jumping in sand?

You're getting good advice, start small and fairly slow, a high speed getoff isn't exactly the way to build your confidence. Stay in the "attack" riding position, STANDING-with your knees and elbows bent, remember what your Lakota weighs and that its suspension isn't up to the task of anything too big. Most importantly wear protective riding gear at all times and have fun!

Her Schmit,
It's all in the technic!
When you have to start big, ya just know how!
A happy bowlegged Polaris owner.
