Default setting timing chain

I have a 1998 Bayou 220 and need to know how to set the timing chain. Any
knowledge you can pass along to me would be highly appreciated.

> Turn the crank counterclockwise with a wrench on the alternator rotor bolt.
> The punch mark on the cam sprocket should align with the little bump (or "pointer") on the top of the cyl head.
> Remove the timing inspection plug on the left side of engine.
> Check to see if "T" mark on the alternator rotor aligns with the tiny slot on the bottom of the threaded inspection hole.
You are set to go.

Would the same go for a lakota sport? I want to get some engine work done and replace the gaskets but am afraid of screwing the timing or something up.

Your 300 Lakota is the similar way as following:

> Remove the timing inspection plug and turn the crank counterclockwise with a wrench on the alternator rotor bolt until the "T" mark on the alternator rotor aligns with the "slot" on the crankcase hole.
> Install the cam sprocket under the chain and make sure the "LF300" mark on the sprocket aligns with the pointer on the cyl head.
> Install the center bolt on the cam sprocket and while tightening it, hold the alternator bolt to prevent the crank from turning.
> Install cam chain tensioner.
> Check cam timing again by turning the crank CCW and make sure the "LF300" mark on the sporocket aligns with the pointer.
> Check again to make sure "T" mark on the alternator is aligned with the "slot".

Once you do this correctly it seems much easier next time, just like anything else

You both need to get a manual. Sit down and read it, it will guide you through.
Its simple and straight forward, its written in 5th grade english.

It is from the genuine Kawi service manual, page 3-16 of the book P/N 99924-1057-02 .

I was referring to tamiyacrawler and junglemel.
If they are getting into engine work, they need a book.

Ya I would like a book, but have seen so much info online and have already done some work that I cant spend 45 bucks on paper when I could get parts. There's so much info on the internet, you just need to do some asking/digging. I've also found sites with exploded diagrams of all of the parts so there's not much more I have to ask.

I'll remember that when I am asked to pull out the book I purchased to give you directions for free.
Once in a while is understandable, a whole rebuild on other's good nature is being a "user".

Another reason I don't post in here often.
Out.
