you need 3 things to run an engine.
spark
compressoin
propper fuel/air mix
check the plug for good spark. then, with plug removed, place your finger over the plug hole and with kill switch off hit the starter. it should blow your finger out of the hole. finally you may need to clean the carb if you are not getting proper fuel/air mix

ok i put in a new spark plug and new battery(the old one tested bad), but i still can not get it to fire. I just found out that the last time it ran it ran out of gas. My guess is that a bunch of crap got into the carb so its not getting any fuel. Is this a likely cause? if so how can a person who has a very limited knowledge on small engine repair fix this.
any help is appreciated.

take off carb. losen/move hose clamps on the intake the whole carb and cables can just be moved up and tipped upside down. remove 4bolts on the bottom of the carb, this will allow you to remove the bolw and access the jets inside it. remove jets one at a time, spray with carb cleaner and make sure to clean inside hole of the jets, welding wire or sturdy guage fishing line works well. also clean/remove the pilot jet, its located outside the bowl twords the engine. NOTE: when you reinstall the pilot jet skrew all the way in then back OUT 2 1/2 turns ish.
you can spray the inside of the carb down as well. if you are in doubt have someone els do it, but if you want to learn to do your own service buy a service manual: best investment in your ATV!

Ok so i took the carb off and found green sludge in the lines and carb. my guess is that the old gas left in the lines and carb crystallized and when the old gas got mixed up with new gas it turned to the green sludge that i saw. the fuel filter is a solid chunk of green. so for 37 bucks i got an air filter, fuel filter, carb rebuild kit, and spark plug. (I got all this at at my local Kawasaki dealer). Ill let you guys know how it turns out.

i tried that to no avail. it has an electrical issue which is why it died. It was running fine in reverse and the it just died fo no reason all the lights cut off and everything. I am going to check the fuse when i get off work. Im going riding with a friend this weekend and would love to be able to take this if i can
