A 2004 kfx 700 joined the family today. Son said it followed him home. Guess we gotta keep it now. My question is about the over ride button located on the left handle bar grip. What the heck is this and what does it do. Any info would be appriciated. As of now I do not have an owners manuel so I really do not have a clue what this is for. Thanks.

 

Welcome! The override button is so you can have full power in reverse. (Rev limiter)

thanks alot. probably would never have figured that one out without manuel or asking someone. I new that when i would push it while in drive nothing happened. Even with knowing what it is for (rev limiter) I am questioning myself if this is something we will ever need to use? Its not like ya need to go fast in reverse. We obviously have not had time to ride it much. It was unloaded from truck, made a couple of circles and one ride down the road before it was dark. Can ya give my some ideas why this would be used or needed. Thanks

 

You will appreciate it in mud/snow or on a steep hill. Almost any bike with a belt tranny has this feature. Good luck with the new bike!

 

I agree with Hemi...if you over rev the motor while spining in mud or snow..bye bye motor! The limiter keeps the revs down to avoid this in the situations that he has mentioned. Same goes for reverse...the gearing is lower in reverse..so no need to over rev there as well. The cvt trans has multiple ratios in drive...just not when in reverse. Welcome and enjoy your bike

 

The way it was explained to me by my dealer was that if you’re going fast in reverse and you make a sharp turn the bike will tip so Kawai put a rev-limiter on reverse. Try hitting the throttle hard in reverse and you will hear the engine sputter (rev-limiter kicking in). If you’re stuck and trying to back out of the situation or trying to pull someone out of a hole in reverse and you need full power to do it hit the over ride button to over ride the reverse rev-limiter. Hope this explains it.

Reverse rev limiter is for safety of the rider not for the engine.

CVT has infinite ratios.

CVT works the same way in reverse (thus having the infinite ratios) because converter rotates in the same clowckwise direction whether in reverse or forward.
