I have a Mojave that is all stock. I'm thinking about purchasing another one as well. I think it might be the right quad for me. I ride pretty much everything terrain wise except wet areas, lots of desert, dunes, and mountain trails. I love jumping but not huge. Heres what I have planned so far.

Works dual rate Steelers w/o rezzies

Works Quadstar w/rezzy out back

Lakota Swingarm

Now I need to make some more horsepower, what pipe makes the most power for the Mojave? I dont care how loud it is because of were I ride.

What type of pod air filter is a direct fit?

What else should I do to make more power? I cant afford the big bore kit until about this time next year, I think I read somewhere the 330 kit is like $800.

Would a cam be a good purchase without the stroker kit?

What about an 11:1 compression piston (or around there)?

I too have a new 2001 Mojave 2 months old. I weight 220 lbs. I have a White Brother E Series and a K&N filter. The pipe and filter helped a small bit but after a trip to Attica a couple weeks ago, I have decided it was time to give it to the wife (until my 9 yr. old boy grows into it in a year or so) and get a 400EX. Some of the hills we were climbing eat up the Mojave. I kept referring to my Mojave as a little green $h!t. Understand, these hills were steep and long but the 400EX's, Scramblers, Warriors and others made it no problem. Top speed was not the problem, low end to mid range was a dog. I gave myself a long head start and got into high RPM thrid gear and by the time I go to the top the power was gone. If I shifted into second to maintain a high RPM, the power was still gone. I ended up screaming up the hills at about 9,000 RPM in second to save face. Funny though, when we drag raced, the Mojave's slightly beat the Warriors by about a bike's length. But the Mojave doesnt have the low end to mid range to be a versatile quad.

Now I know the other Kawa faithfulls are going to spit on me now but fact is, Kawa needs to retire the heavy, narrow, outdated, power lacking Mojave and launch a new sport quad with the Prairies 660 twin in a lightweight frame to compete with the Raptor, DS and eor even the 400EX. In my opinion though, I think Kawa will come out with a 350 to 400cc to compete in the 440 max cc class. Think of a 400cc, dual overhead cam, 4 to 5 valve, liquid cooled 4 stoke weighing around 370 lbs. It would kill the 400EX and easily compete with the Raptor and DS.

Keep Dreaming...

My Mojave suffered from the exact same problems until last week. I dont know if you read my post "shaved 16lbs off my Mojave," if not you may want to take a look at it. It made a pretty big difference.

This weekend I mixed 112 octane fuel with 93 (50/50) and man what a difference. There is a hill like you described above, I usually hit it 3rd gear wide open and by the time I get 3/4 the way up its starting to bog and I have to clutch it. With this fuel it kept is revs and around the top I started picking up some forward momentum instead of bogging like it used to.

I'm not going to bother with a 400EX, I rode one a couple of weeks ago and it didnt feel much different power wise than the Mojave did. I'm going for the LT250 instead, same price as a used Mojave and a lot more power. Little bit more maintenance but oh well.

I have a supertrapp pipe and end with a uni filter, with a dynojet kit and was very pleased with it. But 400's kept on getting me at mid range so I went and purchased Web cams race cams. and put a wiseco stock piston on it. then I had to go to a 13 tooth front sprocket because I was running 18's on back. But now 400's are no problem even with an experienced rider. Mojave comes with a 11:1 compression piston stock.Web cam sells a all around cam that bolts in the Mojave.I wouldn't recommend a stroker kit because it makes the piston weaker.I also run 110 octane in my Mojave. I hoped this helped.

Mickey Dunlap makes an awesome 330cc kit for the Mojave. I have the 330cc piston/sleeve kit, Webcam cams/springs(which are for sale), and some mild port work, and a YZ250F carb. It will SCREAM! BUT!...it wasn't enough. Mickey Dunlap has my entire motor and is giving it the entire Four Stroke Tech 330cc treatment. FST cams, FST Springs, FST valves, etc..It's best to use all FST peices in the 330cc puzzle. That way everything fits and works the way it's supose to. Mickey knows Mojave power. He is the ONLY one I would recommend for any 4-stroke owner, especially Mojave owners. tell him what power you want and he will tell you what you need. No more. No less.

The easiest way to get in touch with him is email. His email address is mdunlap@bedford.net.
