ATV Action - What a joke
#1
Anyone check out the beginner quad shootout in their newest issue? They list the Mojave as a beginner quad and then cut it down because it is kick start with a manual clutch. Mind you the Blaster is included in this shootout as well but its manual clutch and kick start are not seen as problems. Kind of strange, don't you think?
They also bitch that the Mojave costs too much and that it doesn't have good enough power. Hmmm, the Mojave competes with the 300EX and is $800 cheaper, that is a good deal. They listed the 250EX as the winner but I know for a fact that the Mojave will kick all over a 250EX. I rented a 250EX in Oregon dunes and it was weak. It doesn't even compare with the Mojave, but ATV Action doesn't seem to realize that.
This shootout was the worst thing I ever read. I'm glad I didn't buy the mag, I just threw it back into the news stand because the article was so flawed and untruthful.
ATV Action hit an all time low. Maybe they are worried about ATV Sport magazine and have resorted to sensationalism in their articles much like the National Inquirer?

Well first off, the Blaster is easier to start, thats why it was ok to have kickstart, while the Mojave is a pain sometimes(I know I had one)Since it was in a beginners shootout a manual clutch was not the best set up for a beginner. Well according to the other quads in the shootout, the Mojave is to much money, and should be able to go faster for as high-tech as it is. Also they said the Blaster was the winner.
And a Mojave should roost all over a 250EX. Look at the engines, A 2-valve pushrod shaft drive vs. a 4 valve liquid cooled DOHC with more cc's. As I said in another thread, these magazines could be making it look bad to get Kawasaki to update it. Most people agree that 15 years is to long to go without any changes. Maybe ATV Action was putting the Mojave in the beginner class because either 1) They figured the Mojave
might have a chance in this class, or 2) To really get Kawasaki to bight the bullet since there quad had sunk so low as to be called a beginner quad, which is what there Lakota is supposed to be. I am not against Mojave's or anything I loved mine while I had it, and as I have said before I just love my 300EX more. All I am doing here is trying to put some logic behind there story. Instead of saying, "My quad lost, those
guys a freakin' idiots for saying that" And I don't think they are anymore biased then any of us. You guys may be biased because you think the Mojave should have won, they may be biased because they think the Yamaha should have won and it did. Heck, maybe the Polaris Trailblazer was actually the best (or not). Like I said I am just trying to put some logic behind there story.

If you want to play Devil's advocate that is fine by me. Let's look at your reasoning behind ATV Action's selection process. You say that no changes in 15 years is bad for the Mojave, well what about the Blaster? It has not changed since its intro in '88. For that matter how about we look at the Trail Boss, cough, I mean Trail Blazer. Yeah the same engine polaris came out with in '85. How about your 300EX, it certainly isn't new, just an '87 250X with electric start and a slight bore job (282cc). Heck even the Warrior isn't much different from its intro in '86 with the exception of the headlights.
Perhaps your right that ATV Action is just slamming the Mojave to make Kawi do something. Thing is, why don't they do it to other manufactures that are just as guilty? Tests like this don't accomplish anything except to make the editors look like a bunch of ignorant hacks.
Your probably right about shooting out the Mojave with some different machines. They probably get tried of writing the same shootout that they have been doing since the late '80s. I know I'm tired of reading it.
I think TRXter said it best.

Well, if they are actually reporters and trying to get the information out to the public, they have a responsibility to be un-biased. It is not their job to try and get the manufacturers to make new machines by yellow journalism parading around as factual competative shootouts. The buying public does that by selecting one atv over another. If these magazines are out for entertainment purposes, that puts them on the level of the WWF and such. I feel that the bottom line is they are out to sell advertising space, not magazines.

Interestingly enough, they claim the 250EX to have such great handling and power, but the LAKOTA had faster lap times. I saw the drag #'s too and the 250EX beat the LAKOTA by 3 tenths of a second. WTF???

From what I have heard, a Lakota will outrun a 250EX in a drag. In fact Dirt Wheels did a shootout between Trailblazer, 250EX, and Lakota. They stated the Lakota is faster, but the 250EX "feels faster". Also, if the 250EX handles so much better and out drags a Lakota, not to mention is so much lighter, why did the Lakota have faster lap times. Kinda makes ya say hmmmmmmm.....don't it?
