650 wheelie power & top speed
#1
I have a 650 with 110 miles on it. I have no general performance complaints such as stalling or sputtering. I followed the break in procudure to a tee and had my dealer perform the first service.
The only time i have pegged it out is last weekend on the way home from the motorcycle shop after having a winch and plow installed. I pegged out at 57 mph, granted i had the plow on and there was wind.
As far as popping wheelies, I have only gotten the front end to lift up after standing way back and pulling while gunning the throttle. Even so this only got the front tires off the ground 6-8 inches.
This was all done on pavement with no tire or engine modifcations and in high gear. I weigh around 180 lbs.
I expected better performance from the reviews and from everyone's posts.
How does this correspond to anyone elses performance? Any suggestions?
Thanks alot.

It sounds like mine. I think the stock tires are so weak that they slip, but you don't hear it. It won't wheelie on the dirt.
I tried to wheelie mine on the grass in low and almost went over backward. Scared me. I also wheelied in high. From what I remember at the dealer, the 650 wheelies readily on pavement in high and holds it up pretty well, I just never seem to have that much pavement to try it.
Mine seems to have more power in hot weather. It only did 57 the other day while riding in snowy weather. It easily goes 64 in hot weather. My choke don't stick. It runs excellent.
I was thinkin about performance parts, but then thought again. Why? I like the way it runs now. If I wanted to win a drag races all the time I would have bought something else. My bigger tires will slow me down off the line, but I don't care.

Sounds not too far off base, you really don't need to be racing with the plow on there, I'd hate for a cable or mount or nut to pop loose and have the plow dig in while going even 30mph.( If you've ever seen a state plow trucks plow dig into pavement at speed it isn't funny either! )
As for performance if you can pull wheelies with a plow that's really something! - but I take it you had the plow off... You'll also gain a few MPH top speed without the plow. Yes your paticular quad does sound a bit on the weak side, but consider polaris designed their SP700 to be "wheelie free" your still not too bad off.
The truth is out there!

I hade to ride home with the plow on because i just sold my truck. I noticed the power shortage after the break in period and I could use all the throtle. This was all before I got the winch & plow thanksgiving weekend. My main concern is it seems as if everone else can pop wheelies on pavement or grass at will, in high or low, and I'm not able too. I'm trying to figure out what the problem might be linked to.

I can almost guarantee that your choke cable is the root of your power loss. The machine will typically run fine but it is causing just enough of a rich mixture to cause massive power loss.
One other thing that happened to mine other than the choke which caused power loss and missing was that the rubber mud deflector just under the air intake snorkel had come loose and was partially blocking the intake.
And last but certainly not least check your belt deflection. It seems some were shipping with the belt adjusted on the loose side.
I hope this helps...

i'm not sure if my dealer has dealt with the choke cable problem before. What is the remedy? A new choke cable or an entirely different setup? I had heard something about an upcoming recall on the cables. Thanks alot.

If you want to get a big wheelie just roll it out to about 4 or 5 mph and then nail the throttle be careful because it will come all the way back very quickly.

Don't feel left out man. I've heard a lot of crap about 660's doing straight throttle wheelies, but mine never has. Maybe about a foot if I pull back. I would really have to muscle up on it to get it up good. As far as top speed, I've heard a lot of stuff on it too. My Grizz says 65, GPS says 60. I think I'll put my stock on the GPS.

Has anyone that had their choke cable replaced had similar symptoms-nothing obvious but not the advertised power or speed. Also the people that replaced their cables, was it a totally new set up or just a new stock choke cable?
Thanks for all the posts.

The problem is that it requires a stiffer spring to pull the plungers all the way back.
I dont know the part # but your dealer should be able to find out. I hear that some dealers have just been replacing the stock cable but this wont help for long.
