The prairie 650 is quicker acclerating than the 660 griz and the sp700. The griz and prairie are about the same at top speed, give or take a little. The main power difference is from the standstill, where the 650 twin delivers more low rpm muscle. I think the 660 and 650 are rated for very similar horsepower numbers, the 650 twin just gives you more torque throughout the whole rpm range (not just high rpm).

The prairie is fun to slide. It out handles the IRS guys in stuff like that and is very fun to ride on hardpack. I powerslide it all the time. I still power slide it even though now I have mud tires on it. It is much more fun to ride than the other guys on hardpack. It does extremely well on overly bumpy boulders, but IRS is better for that. I jump it too. I am suprised at how good it does. Don't even think about getting one of the super heavy quads if you like that kind of riding (I know, I know, I have heavy tires, but I kept the light ones and can change back).

There is something that does not get said enough about comparisons between these two. The sound of the 650 twin engine is so much more pleasant. It vibrates less too. Running the engine is the only this youo do ALL the time. Not brakes, not 4x4, not turning, not bumps. The 650 engine is far superior. A lot of other things about it are better. They are both great, they both have places they do things better. You would be happy with either, but I feel the prairie is a better pick overall. Get it.

nyroc: I agree with you. The Kawasaki has a much sportier feel, and slides alot easier than the Griz. Every year we have an atv pulling contest at our county fair. The last two years my griz ruled and I won the 4X4 classes. This year I was dethroned by the Kawsaki 650. My brother beat me on his new Praire. Well, at least we kept it in the family. The kaw has the touque and low end grunt over the griz 660. The engine sounds bad to the bone. Can not wait til someone makes a set of slash cut drag pipes so we can really **** off the neighborhood.

Great idea on the loud pipes PJ1 - NOT!. Get all the neighbours real mad so they close down more land. As if ATVers don't have enough hassles without thoughtless riders aggrivating people on purpose.

Yukonwhine: Shhhhh! My neighbors ride Harley's. We drag race our quads at a dragway. Trail riding is for girls and old men.

I don't know about that last comment. There are people out there that we need to be very careful about making mad. Avoiding them is all I know what to do about them. I can't ride anywhere in my town. Not even on my own proprety. Why? Because there are too many stupid people that live here. A pro racer bought land here a few years ago, and the town voted that he could not ride on his land anymore because it was too loud (yeah, he was 2 stroking it, and ruined everything for the four stroke crowd too). I really wish those three planes on sept 11 had crashed into some of the people that shut riding down here instead of the world trade center.

Let me tell you a story. My parents got suckered into buying a home in this "nice neighborhood". Unfortunately, their "nice" neighbors complain to the city if my parents: leave their garbage can on the side of the road for more than two hours after it is picked up, if their grass clippings blow over to the neighbor's yard, if they water their grass just a little too long, if they leave anything outside the garage (except the car), if they have too many lights on in the house.

People like that are the ones that close roads to motorcycles (all motorcycles, even though harleys are the ones causing the problem). People like that make it so I can't plow my driveway with my quad, even though it is quieter than a lawn tractor.

People like that make me less proud to be an american, because I know that there are people living in my country who ruin things for the rest of us with stupid legislation.

I do not want to rag on you, PJ1, but my road biker friends and my off-road friends have lost fun pieces of their riding country due to loud exhaust (I know a guy with a quietBMW, but he is still banned on some roads). I like harleys too, but we gotta either get rid of the noise or the complainers.

I know that my state probably sucks worse than yours as far as having rediculous laws, but it is getting worse everywhere.

We either need to stop anoying those quiet loving people or stand up for our aftermarket exhaust rights!

What was this post originally about? Oh yeah, Mudman2k1, good luck on your decision to buy a Prairie. Believe me, there are still tons of great places to ride!

Well said nyroc.
As for PJ1, if you want to make noise in an area where ALL your neighbours are OK with it, that's up to you (and them); but in your post you said you were going to "p*** off the neighborhood". Which is it?
Your kind of attitude is an embarrassment to all ATVers everywhere. You'll be the one whining when there's no where left to ride!

MUDMAN2k1, what the guys are saying is that the big difference between the Grizzly and the Prairie is that the Prairie has virtually no hesitation when the throttle is pushed. The Grizzly hesitates slightly before taking off. I found that once they are moving, they accelerated about the same. Like Nyroc said, the Prairie engine vibrates much less and is quieter under load, but has the nicest sounding exhaust I've ever heard. Try them both and you'll see what he means. They are both great machines, but from your questions, it sounds like the Prairie would be better suited to you since you want more of a sporty quad. The Prairie slides better because of the solid axle and also because it is slightly wider and has a lower center of gravity than the Grizzly. Dirtwheels January issue compares all the top quads. They rate the Prairie best sporty quad and the Grizzly best for comfort. From my brief rides on them both, I think they got it right. I can't comment on the Polaris 700 or the Quest, as I haven't ridden them.
PJ1, I hope you were joking about "pissing off the neighbors".
