I know some of you have put holes or vents in their airbox lid...How large? and how much did it help?

I did not do it yet, but talked to people that have. It makes a big difference.
Uni filter makes filtered plugs you can install for this too.

A kawasaki employee (rep or something) suggested to a guy to drill a bunch of 11mm holes in the lid (1/2" is pretty close). They did not say where or how many. I would say 6 or 8. Plus, if you use 1/2" holes there are rubber plugs you can put back in if you did not like it.

I am planning on making the holes in the very front of the lid, all kinda close together. I am guessing that water and dirt will get there less, and the air may be a little cooler.

Just so you know, a guy drove his 650 around for a week without the airbox lid on, still had a filter. It added 7mph to his top speed.

Other guys with just a K&N claim much higher top speeds that stockers.

K&N + Holes = more

Your pluging idea is a good one! I would hate to drill a bunch a hole and have a problem with deep water crossing. I know your would get more power but what about carb specs? I all ready have a HMF pipe and DYNOJET kit and also a K&N filter, I wonder how much noticeble power would be with a airbox mode?

Coolinthewoods, I am sure you will gain just about as much power as the filter would give you alone, or the pipe alone. I know the power gains from these don't simply add, because they affect each other, but I bet it is a biggy.

I drilled a 4" hole in my brother's airbox on his truck (4600cc v8), big power gain.

I have been trying to think of a way to get a hose from the airbox lid to the same place as the stock air inlet, but I gave up. There is no room for anything.

Yup, I'm gonna do it. I am going to find the best plug system first, then drill the holes for them. It will be a cinch to put those plugs in when I need to.

All this talk about the airbox is almost making me think removeable snorkle.

So are you guys thinking about adjusting your carbs to compensate for the increased air flow? Are you sure you are just not causing a lean condition? I don't know too much about the carbs on the 650, but when I added a K&N's on my banshee I had to go to larger main jets.

Hello All,
For all you folks wondering how to plug to holes in your air box cover when you go in deep water. What I did was order a replacement air box cover from Kawasaki for about $15.00. That way when I don't want the holes all I do is put on the cover with no holes in it and away I go.
Hopes this helps
Ken

$15? Wow! Best idea yet! I though about that but guessed that it was very expensive.

Thanks for the info.

Just so you know, when I ordered the replacement cover I did not order the seal (I thought it might come with the cover) as I was not concerened about it being sealed. The cover does not come with the seal. What I did was use a O-ring with the same diameter as the seal and cut it and put it where the clips are to make sure the cover was tight. It worked for me. So if you want the seal you have to order it.

Thanks for all of the information. I am going to do some testing with 1/2" holes and see what it does...I can always get a new cover if it does not help much...but I really think it will help.
