So, can you pull start it with a dead battery?

Would someone please disconnect their battery and try pull starting it.

I think it would be dumb to put a pull start on one if it wouldn't get a dead bike going. But maybe it is only good in a situation when the battery would have enough juice to operate the fuel pump, but not crank the quad.

DaveC. Even if your battery was dead, as soon as you start pulling it over by hand, I would think the alternator would crank out enough juice to get it going. It's no different than bum starting your car. As far as someone disconnecting their battery and trying it, give er!! It was your idea!!

Usually if your oil has gas in it you can smell it, sometimes if you have not ran it yet it may even be over full ot thinned out.

As for the pressure build up in fuel tank, this is normal. It is on MINE anyway, it is new with 3hrs. on it---it runs perfect!
Guess my suggestion of checking connections(various electrical) has been ignored, so........you all figure it out. Later.

When I put my winch on, I had the battery disconnected and I used the pull start, it cranked on the first pull. The carbs hold enough gas in them to idle about 3min with the gas off, so if your battery goes dead you will have plenty of gas in the carbs to pull start it.

Hey trail hog, thanks a ton for replying. That might be the issue that gets my money when it comes time for me to upgrade to a twinn. I just can't believe they didn't put a pull starter on the 700.

Hey mastrblastr, If I was fortunate enough to have a 650 then I would try it myself instead of pestering other board members to do it. I just figured someone had already tried it and might not mind enlighting me on the issue.

My 650 doesn't like to crank if you don't give it some throttle, but if you use the pull start it cranks good without any throttle, weird huh.

sounds like the stater needs a little more torque......was the starter a carry over from the 400 or is it a higher output????

just a thought

cartman308, I don't know if it was a 400 carry over or not. The starter spins the engine over pretty fast, as a matter of fact when you pull start it it turns much slower, the only difference is that the automatic decompressor is engaged when you pull start it, that could be the thing.

Same thing happened to me yesterday as I was unloading from a ride the day before. I hit the starter the bike turned over once, and then stopped abruptly like it was seized. I kept pressing the ignition button only to hear the starter click when I did. I shut if off twice and tried to no avail. I let her sit for a minute...I was panicking. I tried the pull cord and it was wouldn't budge like it was seized. I tried the ignition again, and then the pull cord and got the pull cord to move about one revolution (not much). I tried the ignition and it started up like it was flooded a little but was fine after that. Haven't noticed or smelled gas anywhere...and I have no clue why it did this...unless by turning the choke on the carbs dumped too much gas into the cylinder and wouldn't allow compression.

I have no clue...hopefully this isn't an ongoing episode.
