Removing the thermostat on the 650 so it runs cooler

I just wondered if any of you have thought about this, removing the thermostat since hot weather is close, it may help it run cooler or it may run to cool and not get up to operation temp. Could change the thermostat with a cooler one, I suppose.

You really need some sort of thermostat in there. It's the only thing that helps regulate it's temperature, so if you take it out, the fan will run all the time, and that will kill the life of the fan. You should probably just put in a lower temperature thermostat. Like for trucks and what not, there is one called Powerstat. I put a 120 degree in my 99 Silverado, and seemed to help out. The fan didn't run all the time, but it helped the engine run cooler.

somewhere on the forum somebody said they put a thermostat from a Kawasaki Mule in the 650 and made it run cooler

Feb 10th the thread was called "650 overheating"

I'm pretty sure you need a thermostat .I think it without it the coolant runs through too fast to absorb the heat from the engine .I'm not 100% percent sure.

Anybody wanna fill us in ?

the bike will run cooler whith the thermostat in it than if you would remove it

I know in cars/trucks that if you remove the t-stat it will take a long time to get warm,If you went on a long trip w/o a stat it would eventully overheat.

An engine that runs 200 deg will have less cylinder wear than one that runs cooler(160/180)It will also have less deposits.

A stat is kinda essential for both engine life and cooling.

Does anybody know how hot your quads are getting?Are they boiling over? or is the fan just coming on alot?Maybe the bike has a 190 stat,and the fan is supposed to come on at 200?

Kingmort is right. One guy did say you can run a mule thermostat in there to keep it cooler. Do they make a lower temp stat for the 650? They also say if you run a synthetic V-twin oil it will help it run a cooler. Also, you can get an additive for your coolant that is supposed to make youe engine run 40 degrees cooler. I think I saw it on the Highlifter site. I'm gonna change my oil this week and put in the Amsoil 20w50 V-twin synthetic so I will let you know if it makes any difference.

A guy posted on here and said the service man. state's that the thermostat open's at 160 degree's and the fan comes on at 208 degrees.

Thanks for the info, Stakk, another guy that said his fan was runninig too much, said that either his thermostat or fan switch was not operating per spec, and that is why his fan ran so much.

Please, people, stop saying that no thermostat will make it overheat, that is not true. The thermostat restricts coolant flow until the water has heated up and then it opens. So if it was removed, it would have NO EFFECT on a hot motor, since not having one is the same as having one that has opened up. I have run many vehicles without a thermostat (I hated doing it, but had to), and it only made them warm up slow, or sometimes not warm up. I don't think removing it is a bright idea.

The coolant additive you may want to try is called Water Wetter, made by Redline. It changes the surface tension of the coolant, which makes the air bubbles on the metal surfaces smaller. This allows water to flow better close to the metal and more effectively get into contact with the metal and take heat away from the head, or dump heat off in the radiator.

My fan seems to run half as often as it did before the water wetter, but I wonder if the fan switch is set too cold, and that the fan runs too often for no good reason. Some cars have fan switched set at 260F.

nyroc, I have a bottle of the water wetter, am going to put it in in a few more weeks.Question, It says on the bottle that it will lower temp's more with plain water, is this what you did or did you use antifreeze with it? also how much of the wetter did you put in, If your fan is running half as often Im glad I bought the stuff.
