The solenoid is supposed to make a whirring sound when you shut it off, and when you are going slow. If it is making a lot of noise, it could be busted.
The transmission has some gear play, which clicks when the slack goes one way or the other. Normal noise, ignore it.
If the gearshift is out of adjustment, the gears won't engage, usually low range does not engage properly, and the gears will make a ratcheting sound as you slow down. The shifter is easy to adjust.
The symptoms you describe, don't really sound like what I am used to. I wish I was more help. Good luck.

y Prairie 650 akes alot of weird noises in low range, when I go aove 25 KM/H and let go of the gas, it does a ratcheting sound, just like if you where trying to engage a mnual transmission car into gear without pushing on the clutch. Thing is it engages real good, and is ok when I accelerate, or when I'm in High gear. Where is this selector adjustment, And what is the procedure t be sur it is well set in place??

My Prairie made a knocking screeching noise when the key was turned off, the dealer found the k.e.p.s. was melted inside and my howling and knocking in low range was the drive clutch going out. hope you have better luck

Mudkicker, yours is easy. You do hafta take the middle cover off (the one sorta covering the engine. Take shift **** off too. You will see on shift linkage two lock nuts, one at either end. Loosed both (note that one of them is a left hand thread, so keep your eyes open). Twist shift linkage to make it shorter. I started the engine at this point, so that I would get a slight grind while moving the shifter, and adjusted the linkage until the gear engagement amount was equal between reverse and low.
Right now, you shift linkage is long, and therefore you are pushing the tranny more into revese than you need to, and you are not pulling the tranny into low far enough, so the gear ratchet.
Hope that helps.

Adjusted mine also!
Everything jives now except the reverse light on the console. Tried to adjust so that it would come on but started coming in and out of low range again. I left it where the light would'nt come on (overide not needed in reverse when light is off neither), would rather that than ole green jumpin in and out of low.
Anyone else had the light prob?
Just curious

Hey fishead, when I tried to readjustemy tranny lever, I had the same problem with the reverse light, So looked at the system closely, then fiugred it out. The reason why it's s hard to adjust and have everything working great is that the stroke of the lever is not long enough, by plaing with the linkege rod, we don't realy give more stroke to the lever, we just put the stroke in a different place ( more towrds the low gear, or more towards the reverse gear) So the thing you have to do is to lenghten to rod wich is used as the shifter lever. if you look closely you will see at the bottom of this rod theirs is an threded adjustment. What I did is I completely removed the rod from it's lower section(to see how long of tred I have) and rethreaded in half ways, wich made it longer then it was original. After that I re-centered the stroke of the lever with the linkage lever. Now every thing works juste great. I was luky to readjuste it juste fine a the first try, i guess you will have to try and see. but if your bike has the same trouble then mine, juste tread your shifter lever half way and you should be fine.
