650 De-tuned

No, I don't have the filter and jet kit. I will get it soon.
I rode in the rain today. The rain made the mud a little better. I got gloves with a rubberized coating, and a full rainsuit - not the cheap kind, the decent kind that does not rip, or fill with air. I wore my knee high boots. It was a riot. I hardly got wet. My bro got stuck in the mud finally. He has a stock 400 Prairie, and since he rooled it the first time he rode it, he has been very nervous since and won't do anything. Today was probably his first fun ride since the day he rolled it last fall.
I noticed more power again today. I can wheelie a lot better.
I also noticed my fan running a lot. I wonder if I am running lean, and that is making the motor heat up a bit more now. Maybe the K&N filter will make it a lot leaner, but the jet kit will fix that.

When you insert the UNI filter plugs drill your 1" holes around the side of the airbox. This will help prevent water from getting in. Like NYROC GOOP is great stuff - when you insert the UNI plugs put GOOP around the hole so you get a good seal. On the air box there is a trey and I took my Drimial tool and ground down the side wall so water would drain from the trey. I have 12 holes on my cover - all on the sides. I also drilled three holes on the front cover where you fill the radiator and put 3 plugs in. I removed all of the foam from my plugs and even cut away the plastic screen over the top. All my plugs do is divert water away from the holes. If you don't use the plugs then there is a very good chance that incidental water could get into the air box.
I also choose to us a No-Toil Air Filter because they are the oil is biodegradable and the filters can be cleaned in water soluable solution. What is unique about this product is that before water will break down the biodegradable oil it requries a special cleaning solution mixed in with the water. Bottom line is that the biodegradable oil acts as a water barrier. They also provide grease to seal around the air filter.
Mike Penland is in the process of final testing on new cams, a CDI black box and a few other goodies for the 650. Mike is letting me and a buddy of mine test a few of his products before he releases them.
Later this spring or early summer I will an article on ATVScene's web site that will review about 15 modifications we made to our 650's. The article will be in the Rec Rider Column when it is released. We are still waiting for a few products that manufactures promised us at the Dealer Expo. Most of these should be in our hands by the end of the month.
The 650 is an awesome platform to build one of the most reliable and fastest ATV's on the market. Wait until you see how we modified and built new bumpers so we could run without the racks on without sacrificing the rigidity that the racks provide - Whey the see you riding everyone wants to know what you are riding!!!! We can all be proud of ourselves for picking the Kaw 650 - Good job guys!

Thanks for the input, like all the other replys i have learned alot about freeing up the air intake and letting my 650 take a deep breath and not compleatly drain my pocket. Do you have any pic's available of the mod's done on your airbox I would be very interested in checking those out. do you notice the power increase in low end torque? is there any increase in top end? thanks in advance.

You can get the angled footpegs from Pendland Brothers Racing (706) 746-2812. My digital camera is on vacation with a friend but when he gets back I take a picture of the airbox and e-mail to you. Obviously, the article will be loaded with closeup pictures of all the modifications and detail information on each one.

Velly interesting, all this good stuff about modifying the 650. This is what the forums are all about. In my case I'm always interested in providing more air for the fire, but really don't want to get into rejetting, and a lot of the more technical stuff. It has been my experience that it is hard for a novice to do improve on the stock stuff and make it worth the $$$'s but for those really into it, what the heck!! Engine mods that change the torque curve by very much will require clutch reworking to adapt to the new motor. Lots of more stuff.

Oldman Wheeler,
If you want to email me your pictures I can put them on my photos website. And if you want to make a little webpage I can put that up there too. If your interested send me a Private message and I'll send you my email address.
Actually what would be real nice is a walkthrough on making/installing some of these mods. Step by step instructions and pictures on how to Install/Rejet, install exhaust's, Install Univents, snorkels, install the cams and other major projects. It seems that most of us are not even weekend mechanic's and have very little experience with that sort of thing.

My Friend's New Yamaha R1 almost got her broken in!

Thanks for the offer Digital650 but my agreement with ATVScene won't allow it. I hope to have the article and pictures ready by the middle of May. The biggest thing right now is I'm waiting on two items that won't be ready to ship for another week or two. Everything else is done. I'll make a post as soon as I have a firm date for the article.
