what is the coolant filter of carburetor on the 650 ?

Hope this doesn't sound stupid, but are the carbs water cooled on the 650, if not what in the world is that coolant filter doing hooked to the carbs ( it looks like it's hooked to carbs anyway, maybe not ). I don't have a manual yet so I'm confused.

It is not a filter, it is a flow restrictor. There is a little white piece of plastic inside it that reduces coolant flow. I know this because mine melted and let all the coolant out. I just plugged the hoses and kept going. But I will fix it soon. I'm not sure how it happened, the water was not too hot, but that plastic thing melted and ruined my trail ride. I think I will use a brass fitting there so it won't melt in the future.
You are right, the carbs are cooled to eliminate vapor locking.

My radiator was pretty much clogged, and my tire was flat. That caused the engine to get pretty hot. The overheat light never lit, and the water did not boil over.
That little plastic thingy melted at way too low of a temp. I will post a picture of what I am going to replace it with.

I don't know if anybody cares about this, but here is what I did to fix it.

I wanted to replace it with something else other than easy melt.

Trailhog, to answer your question it's actually designed to keep you carbs warm so that they dont ice up in the winter. I was really glad to see these in stock form because I had to add a heater to my older prairie 400 to keep it from icing up and not wanting to idle.

I wonder if it was weak because I got gas all over it when I changed the jets?
I still can't figure it out. The water was not boiling over before, couldn't be that hot. The crankcase wasn't that hot.
Why did that cranky little thing burst open?
Oh well, matters less to me now than everyone else. Mine is brass now.
