300 bayou
#1
A good buddy of mine has a chance to buy a 97 300 bayou, are these good machines? Just wondered if they have any weak points or what to look for as in what wears out first on these machines. Thanks for all advice in advance.

Terry,
I own a Bayou 220 and a good friend rides a Bayou 400 4X4. We have both been extremely happy with them. I will say this however. The Bayous are pure utility quads with a soft ride made for pleasure and work. Do not buy them if you're looking for speed and thrills.
I only regret not spending more and buying the Bayou 300 instead.

I had a 1995 Bayou 300 4X4 for 6 years of absolutly maintenance free troubles. I changed the oil and serviced the air filter and that was it. It never went to the shop except for checking the valves. After the 4th trip the service tech told me that the valves are not moving around and probubly wouldn't. No need to check adjustments anymore. I still did it because the machine was good to me and the tech is honest and needs to eat too.
That thing would crwawl up just about anything in low range. I would ride in low range in 3rd & 4th gear everywhere. It was almost like having a 2 speed auto.
A bullet proof machine.

TerryM,
Say man ...if you buy this Bayou 300 you will be making a great choice. I own a 96 bayou 300 and its bullet proof.....I have yet to have any problems. I use it mainly for hunting the white tail, but aslo frequent the muddy Louisiana terrain weekly on trail riding trips with the kawasukikirby. The 300 can be slipped out of positive rear traction into limited slip for smoother stearing , but when you need both tires grabbin, lock it in and have some fun. My only limits are ground clearance and water depth. I've been in water so deep my back pockets got wet and the 300 kept on runnin, even pushed water over the front fenders and into my lap.....no problem.
Ocasionaly my ego gets me in the wrong place but I've got a dependable super wench to bail me out. It may not be fancy but it is in my opinion a great bike. Let me know how you like it!
