650 problem
#1
Just want to see if anyone has had or heard of this problem. The 650 is going to the dealer tomorrow. I was out riding today and stopped for lunch and my fan kept running for about 10 min after it was off and sometimes when I would stop to wait up for people it would just stall out on me. Later in the day it stalled out on me and I had a lot of trouble starting it back up, if it started then it would barely be running and if you hit the gas it would stall more. I finally got it started to the point where I can drive it and it stalled out again 50 yards later. So it kept doing this and finally I stopped and someone pointed out I had coolant leaking. Looked at the level on the side and it was extremely low, then I opened the cap on the front and as soon as the seal was broke it started hissing and coolant poured out. Finally ended up leaving it there and bringing the trailer to it to get it out. Let me know if anyone has any kind of idea.thanks

I have noticed that my fan runs alot more than othr atvs. (or so it seems) One time it did stall I also noticed the temp light on so i shut it down for a few minutes and fired it back up no problems sice then. I am curious to hear what your dealer says...keep us posted.

I think someone else said our fans run more because of a low setting on the fan switch, or it is a slightly defective switch.
Anybody notice their fan being loud, the fan bracket has a faulty spot weld that you need to fix (the bottom arm). I met a guy over the weekend who was mad at his 650 because the fan bracket being loose wore a hole in his radiator. I have already fixed this, but I thought it was just me.
My fam ran all the time when my radiator was clogged. Now it does not run much.
Hey northark, I am still loosing coolant. My bottle is empty after about 5 or 6 hours of ride, and I had to add about a cup of coolant to the radiator. It is definitely leaking slower than it was with the bad water neck, but I'm still loosing coolant.

It sounds more like the problem isn't the plastic neck, it is that the coolent is getting too hot. The 650's run way too hot. I've read that you can swap out fan switches from a mule (fan comes on earlier) and/or thermostats (lower temp). But I really hate to mess with that kind of stuff on a new machine. I wonder if the '03 machines are any different?

Hey Nyroc,
keep the garage door open... ( I'm not sure if your "all there" after your little accident)
So should I be terribly concerned about this fan being on a lot? or is something that I should be mindful of.

Yeah dash, I am all here, or at least I am as alert as I ever have been. So, If I am a fry short of a happy meal, I have always been. My friends have thought I am a brick short of a full load for a long time.
Many 650's run lean and run hotter as a result. Since I jetted mine, it runs cooler (and much better).
My 650 does not really run hot, in fact my fan hardly ran all day saturday. Although I have not checked it yet with my thermocouple, I read about somebody who did check the fan switch and overheat sensor. He basically felt that the fan cut-in temp was low, and the cutout temp was low too. I cant seem to find his post. Anyway, if he is right, that would cause a lot more fan operation.
I am not concerened in the least bit about the temperature settings. It works fine like it is. But leaking, I have to fix that. It has just been to hard to see it leak anywhere, since it leaks so slow.
My 650 had not lost a drop of coolant until salamanca (april), where the plastic cooling parts all got weak and melted or were eroded by what appears to be a chemical cause. My 650 did not really run hot with the radiator mostly clogged, since the overheat light never lit. It does work, since the overheat light comes on after a while when there is no colant left after it leaks out. I have the problem mostly fixed. I just have another leak somewhere I gotta find.
