NYROK, a question and a thanks
#1
Nyrok, I replaced my driven spring using your spring compressor and tips on your web site. All went great. Thanks. It only had one shim and I had to remove it to get it in spec. Is one shim stock or did my dealer remove some at the first service. Anyway it squeals a little when in gear and not moving but I can live with that.
I used a PVC cap instead of the metal. Next time I will use metal. The PVC caps at Lowes came in 1.5” and 2” DIA. I guess those are the standard sizes. The 1.5” was too small to work with the circlip and the 2” was almost too big. It slipped off once and I was kind of worried it would split.
I tried your method of holding the driven clutch while torqueing(sp) the nut but didn’t feel that I could hold the extension steady enough and didn’t have a socket that fit the hole very well. I used a different idea that seemed to work well and was wondering what you thought about it. I stood the extension up on the frame just forward of where the foot break spring is attached and rotated the driven sheave until the extension nested on the flat spot out side of the hole. It fit toward the bottom of the hole so it did not apply force to the thin wall of the hole. It worked great with nothing to hold steady or slip.
Thanks again
Martin

In my defense, sommeone else told me the PVC pipe cap worked. I edited my tech tips to say that the PVC cap slips. Steel cap it is.
I'm not perfect. I wrote something that was wrong and already helped someone hurt their pulley, so I have gone back to telling people to only use the real tool or an impact wrench.
I keep adding things I read about, and hopefully they will help people.
I also noticed that all the major web search engines list my website now. I get a lot more hits.

MDG...I have changed the driven spring on two 650's and both had a single 1.4mm shem. I had to get a .6 shem from the dealer to put back into my buddies 650 to stop the squeal when stopped in gear. I think .8, 1.0 and 1.2mm shems are also available.
.1mm change in shem changes belt deflection 1.6mm or .063inch.
