Need Help

I have a relative that informs if you take a prairie and griz and mod them that the griz will kill the prairie. I am not the most mechanically inclined but based off most of the info i read its the contrary...that the v-twin is alot more powerful then the single banger despite giving up some CCs. His take on it is that if they are stock...then the prairie might have a slight edge off the start and only the start...but once you start mod'n then the grizzly will rip apart the 650. I believe he basis this off of CCs or maybe the horses the 660 throw out.
Now can anyone give me any factual data on why that is not the case...or is it? I rode the griz...and i do like...but that tippy soft riding pretty boy didnt seem to have near the response and the head snap of our bulldawg, I mean prairie (that is what the thing looks like to me...i do believe the griz has it in the looks department).
Any help you can provide me in this seemingly senseless squabble (i know they are both darn good quads) would be greatly appreciated....

Let your friend do all the modin he wants to the fizzly then get a cdi box from 1bearman (when they are out) and go race for pink slips. With the retarded ign. on the 650 it doesn't mater what you do it wont go like a totally tweeked grizz but without the restriction all he'll see is your bald back tires.

What your relative said is downright stupid. The 660 only produces 1 less horsepower than the 650, but that is due to some very serious detuning of the 650 v-twin. The 660 is not even remotely detuned as much. However, if the 650 is never allowed to have it's CDI modified, the 660 surpass it, but if the 660 were held to the same timing restriction, the 660 would not even come close. The fact that the 650 is so much more detuned than the 660 causes it to not respond as much to simple add-ons like exhaust and air filter. I think this is the reason that some people mistakenly feel that there aren't ponies to be gotten out of the 650. The opposite is true, when all things are considered.
The 650 motor is more of a bullet bike design, much more geared toward producing power than a single thumper or a polaris pushrod inline 2, since it is an 8 valve overhead cam design.
A general rule of thumb is that using smaller cylinders will give better volumetric efficiency (suck more air in) than an engine using big ones. the 8 valve vtwin could easily spank a single cylinder of similar size if given equivalent tuning. Weight factors into this, which is why motorcyles that race often use a v-twin instead of an inline 4. If weight and handling were equal, the 4 banger would spank any v-twin.
The 650 has more restricive airbox, but until you get an aftermarket cdi, it won't help all that much to fix it, especially at upper rpms.
The 650 has a more restrictive camshaft profile, but until you get the cdi, changing the camshaft wont really do all that much.
The 650 can be bored and stroked to a larger size than the 660. Doesn't matter, single thumpers just don't have the ability to produce as much.
The people that race the modified 650's have destroyed the modified 660s. Your relative is not well informed.

See i read somewhere that the v-twin should spank any single thumper...I believe it was in pop mechanics or something. So basically he is right when it comes to simplified mods like ex pipes or air filters...but once the detuned timing on the 650 is corrected the single banger will not touch it...is that a short summary here NYROC

Yup, that's pretty good.
My friend offered to let me ride his 660, while he rode mine. I only rode about the 660 for 60 seconds and had to have my 650 back. I couldn't stand the soft suspension.
I am not power hungry. His 660 had enough power for me, I just can't stand the ride.

The people i ride with are all yamaha fans...so I am constantly getting pounded by the Griz being top dawg. Just this time, I know i read a technical article somewhere that said the design of the kawi v-twin made the power plant far superior to any single banger...so when i heard the mod'n smack i had to challenge it.

I have raced 5 or 6 with al least as many Mods as mine. And have beat them all .I will do it again at the ice drags comming up. ( we have it with one of the ice fishing derbys alot of fun)The Mods I have made are in prepeation for the CDI and cant wait untill it is released.
