Slip-type differentials are designed to allow one wheel to turn slower or "slip" while the opposing wheel rotates faster when making turns. It eliminates the "push" you feel when trying to make a turn on an ATV that doesn't have it. However, the feature can be problem when you get stuck such that one wheel looses traction. Torque is taken away from the wheel with traction and placed on the opposing wheel where it spins uselessly. By allowing the rear wheels to be located at the differential, both wheels receive equal torque no matter what.

I have a 300 4x4 Bayou. It is a very reliable simple machine. It does not have a selectable 4 wheel 2 wheel drive. It is full time 4 wheel drive. I does however have a high/low semi-auto transmision. In low range it will pull logs or just about anything. For a full time 4x4 it is very 'light' on the steering, you can't hardly tell it is a 4x4 machine.
