Default Fan question

I was riding today and noticed my fan was kicking on rather often on my 650. It was approx 25 degrees F. out so it was not warm at all. I even noticed that the fan would kick on AFTER the bike was shut off. We were eating with the bikes off and approx 3-4 minutes later the fan came on and started to run. I looked at the rad and it does not look muddy at all, is this normal or do I have a problem? The bike has 12 hours on it so I was just finishing the break in period.
Thanks

Was the key off when the fan kicked on? It sounds like you need a new fan relay (if thay have one) or the switch that turns the fan on.

Yep, the key was in my hand - about 10 feet away Talk about weird huh? I never hear of the fan coming on when the machine is off and the key is out? Anyone else ever have this happen? Thanks

It can and will run in key off mode. Just like cars. This is because when you shut the engine down heat is still being transfer through the metal and coolant. While the bike is off and still hot the coolant is still flowing due to some kind of physics law.

Do you think that is normal when it is in the 20's out? Little concerned what it will do when it is 90 or 100 out. Thanks for the info!

That law of physics is called: thermo-siphon. Model "T" Fords used this law to circulate the coolant. They had no water pump!!!!!!
Enough history and science, clean the mud off of the BACK of the radiator with your garden hose sprayer. It'll be O.K.
