Default What to buy as a beginner rider? 700? :)

Am 30 years old, 6'.00 tall and a skinny little bastard at 165lbs.

I have ridden an 80 almost 12 years ago for 1 hour,
Honda 400EX through trails and dunes for 6 hours just 2 months ago
Honda 200R trails bike for 5 hours just 2 weeks ago.

All of these machines obviously weren't mine and I felt that they were a little too easy to ride.
(After 2 hours I was doing sand doughnuts and jumping the 400EX)
(After 2 hours of riding the 200R bike I was jumping and climbing 45degree hills).

Half of my friends ride bikes and half ride quads. I have decided to go quad after riding the 400EX and after a week researching to find the right quad I have come to this:

KFX400
or
Used Raptor for $4000
or
KXF700 -oh hells yea!

Now, I am a very careful rider and do not plan to race. I know I can master the KFX400 and will be quite happy for years, However that KFX700 is simply bad *** and I love the idea of the automatic and shaft drive.

You you guys think I will be cool behind the handlebars of this monstrosity, or will it eat me alive?

yeah the machine is great but you also have to take into acount that this is a very powerful machine. The weight of the machine is the highest of them all. since you are an inexpericed rider I would suggest to go with the 400. I will agree the 700 is a great machine I have driven one (for a short amount of time) and there was alot of power behind it. I have been riding for about 3 or 4 years now and I first started with a tailblazer 250 and then a sport 400. if you are going to be just trail riding and not doing any large jumps or racing the kfx 400 would be plenty.

Hey Fizzak ..... one important question here..... how big is your body ?????

I am a big guy ...... when I get on my buddy's rappy .... I feel like a size nine foot shoved into a size 7 shoe

The 700 "fits" me just right

The V-Force is a sweet ride. But I have read a lot of threads about inexperienced riders wreakin' them. If you use some disgression, you will be fine. Just exercise some throttle control, specially when exiting corners.

Get the VForce. Smooth and fast. Why shift when you can do anything and more with the V.

Thanks for your opinions, I am seriously considering the 700 and these opinions will sway my decision. (and the price$$)

My experienced friend seems to think I can handle a Raptor 660r. My biggest worry about riding a powerful quad is accidentally popping the clutch too fast and rolling over. I don't see that happening on an automatic. Three more votes and I will make a decision.

No, you wont have about popping the clutch and tipping over, just giving the V to much gas and tipping over.

You can pop the clutch and flip over with lots of quads. In time you will learn to master a clutch, if you want to.

If you buy a used raptor, stay away from the 01 models, tranny problems. No problems from 2002 on.
A kfx 400 would be a great bike for anyone, but you run the risk of being dissatisfied very early. You will have much more power at your disposal on either a raptor or 700, without having to pour money into the engine. I would rule out the smaller kfx if you really were able to master a 400ex and a dirt bike in only a few days. With any quad you have to be cautious about the power. That said, you can never have enough of it either. If money is an issue, the used raptor would look pretty good. It is more of a sport quad and weighs about 100 lbs less than the v force. The 700 is more of a cruising bike, made for the speedster who wants to be able to run with the big bore boys and still be able to putt around.

If you will ride more jumps, tight trails, and mx tracks, go with the raptor. If you want to cruise the trails and dunes, but dont need to fly over tabletops, go with the kfx700.

3TV, I have heard about the jumping prowess of the kfx700. A previous thread had a testimony of a 50' tabletop taken by the v force. I will not take away from that. I simply meant that the other options are inherantly more of an mx bike than the 700, which, btw, would be a perfect GNCC racer.
