Default No shims/new belt

Am doing some mods to my 650 and one of them was replacing the old belt with a new one. I had previously installed the EPI black spring and had all shims removed from the driven pulley. It held up well but I could tell the belt was worn/slipping slightly. I put the new belt on and she squeels like a mad pig when in L, H or R and not in neutral. I knew it was going to squeel but didn't think it would be this bad. Think it's still better this way (tighter) than if I add a shim?

Also, I have some gunk (oil/dirt I guess) buildup around the housing of the front diff where the front axle enters. I'm thinking seal going bad? Would this be caused by switching it into 4x4 on the fly? Any ideas or anyone with similar condition?

Leave the belt tight, but go riding where you can ride it in high for a while without having to stop much. It willl stretch out enough to not be so bad. It will last a lot longer that tight and grab like crazy. I left mine after i made it this tight. It is fine. However, other people ad the thinnest shim. So, take your pick.

No, there is nothing wrong with switchin into 4x4 going fast, unless the rear wheels are spinning and the fronts aren't. You either had a stick kill a seal or something.

Parker, You are at the tight end of the spec right. Being a new belt, Without any shims, I would think it would be under spec and way to tight. Be sure to use a weight sale to measure it.

Mine did the same thing, i put the 0.6mm shimin and it took the deflection to 1/2-3/4 way on deflection, you can do this and run it for 500-600 miles then remove it and run the rst of the belt life with no shim's if the squeeling bother's you, just don't leave it in gear without shifting to neutral while it chirping or it will flat spot the belt.......

I just don't like the idea of running the belt that tight. Seems like it would be loading the trans input shaft bearings, and the helix areas of the pulleys. IMO, I'd rather hear it "yelp" on take off, rather than squealing in the ranges(indicating too tight belt). Just my thoughts and opinions, tak'em or leave 'em.
STAKK-- I see you are from Tenn. Did you go to the Windrock Spring ride in Oliver Springs? I did. Rocky/muddy(after 5 days of rain). LOTS of people 400 or so(I was told).

I was there, didn't get there until Sat. morning, I live about 50 miles from Windrock, as far as deflection goes, here's the problem after about 2000 miles, mine has 2200, the sheaves are worn enough to where the shim's don't work out deflection wise, follow me here, I use the smallest they have, a 0.6mm and it put's the deflect close to the high end, I take it out and it is a tad tight, so I really need a 0.3-0.4mm shim to get my deflection right in the middle, Kaw assured me on the phone that if it's whistle's a little in gear it won't hurt anything as long as you shift to neutral to avoid flat spotting the belt, it will make the belt and clutch sheaves last longer, If you allow it to be loose enough to yelp when you pull out, everytime you do this, that spot on the belt and sheaves has slipped, meaning the belt and sheave has burned or glazed a little at that moment, how continue to do this and you have a burned up belt and grooved sheaves long before they should have worn out......

Stakk-- What does your p-650 look like? Do you have pix? Mine is in nyroc's site. '02 Red. I have the black handlebar bag, and black fender bagsa on the frt fenders. I was also carrying a flat fuel pack.
As for the sheave condition, mine has no apreciable grooves yet. I keep the belt just tight enough NOT to "yelp." I need to go back in soon, as it started "yelping" at the Windrock Event.
On another note. The people in Tenn. seem to know how to drive! One of my pet irritations is people that hang in the LH lane of the interstate. The drivers in Tenn. did NOT do this, how pleasant! I was able to run very "briskly" up I-75!

i have pic's but no scanner to download them, It's a 02 red, with ITP atr's, HMF, and twin-air and dyno-jet sticker's on the side if the airbox cover, and a black Tamarak box, Yes people here do drive alittle faster than most, If you happen to get someone in the fast lane driving slow just eat his bumper for a few second's and they merge over and let you by, one tip when yo shim the belt, while you have it apart, run some emory cloth all over the sheaves and sides of the belt, and before you put the clutch back together spray with brake cleaner, helps quite a bit.........Don't spray the belt though LOL......

STAKK-Yep, I am hip to the brakleen routine. Sorry I didn't get to meet more folks. The event had no provision for socializing, or getting to meet others.
