Default feel sorry for those with big quads....

i raced yesterday. hopp's switchback website i used to race dirt bikes in harescrambles, but picked up a quad over the winter (1990 mojave) cheap ($300) and put a little work into getting it running again, and decided to harescramble it.
yesterday was my fourth race on my mojave, in the open c division, which consisted of a number of 400ex's, z400's, a couple banshees and 250r's, warriors, and blasters. most of them had at least a pipe on them. i was running my STOCK 1990 mojave. still stock piston and rings, pipe, etc...
anyways, decent start, made passes early on, and hit only mudhole on course first lap. tried to turn out of it, but front wheels plowed straight forward and SPLOOSH!...oops...
anyways, pulled a big muscle in my lower back getting it out (couldn't back out) and didn't think i was gonna be able to finish the hour long race. but i kept pushing myself, and eventually, the adrenaline overcame the pain, and i flew!!! making passes left and right, up hills, on mx track portion of track, in swamps, EVERYWHERE!. got 9 laps in, in the hour. leader had 10 laps in my class. i ended up in 9th of 18. not too bad i figure since i'm new to four-wheel-mobiles. suspension could've been a little plusher, but other than that, the mojave performed flawlessly. wide open almost the entire woods track.
then i got to thinking. i beat 9 guys on quads bigger, faster, more powerful than mine. how must that make them feel? hehehe...
just thought i'd give a hollar out. all you mojave riders. where there's a will, there's a way. it's like 95% rider. i plan on top 5's before end of 14 race season.

so, BTW, does anyone have any suggestions on making this thing ride a little smoother? i have stock 90 suspension, except i replaced my rear with one off of an 87 (which is rebuildable)

determination. dedication. domination.

Ya man! You can get some pretty good works front shocks! and you can use a rear shock off a 250r!
Also i woudl suggest putting a pipe, filter, and some good tires! and i bet you will do even better!

Default feel sorry for those with big quads....

thanks yall.

i was considering either upgrading mojave or moving up to bigger quad (z400, raptor, banshee, etc... maybe 400ex, but want reverse, so that is a downside.) decided i don't want a quad thatr big, though. i think an advantage to the mojave is the agility of it due to its small stature. it small and quick.

therefore, i think i will look into suspension and mods for it.
how much are those front shocks, and where can i get them? and where do i get ahold of a 250r rear shock (ebay????)

almost bought an exhaust on ebay a couple weeks ago, but would like to keep it quiet. then i got talking to my dad, and he suggested getting an exhaust and just putting it on for racing and taking it off other than that. does a pipe require rejetting on a mojave, or is this a resonable plan?
if i did that, i would probably get a filter, too. any suggestions? i ride in a lot of mud and water (by choice, I LOVE IT!!! you can mud bog so much better on a quad than a bike! :-) ...)
but till i decide, the stock engine/pipe seems to have more than enuff grunt and rev for racing in the woods. this is exactly where a bike backgroud shows thru. it's all about carrying momentum and keeping rpm's up.

i just bought new tires over the winter. i guess that is the only non stock piece on the quad. (that and my pastrana style acerbis flag mx handguards off an old bike i bolted up for roost protection of the sensitive organic digits.) maxxis all-traks on rear (22-11-10) and titan fast trekkers up front (21-7-10)
wouldn't even consider any tire under 22". at least right now, cuz ground clearance is # 1 when it comes to woods racing. and i doubt i'll ever mx it (although i have thought about it) cuz id be afraid of breaking something on it or cracking the swingarm or something like that.

any advice, links, etc would help.
i remember a while back a bunch of guys wanted a team for just mojave riders. i guess "team underdog" would probably fit pretty well, huh? lol.
everybody seems to dis the mojave . they say its small, old, and slow,...till it passes them. i guess i just look at it and see as much potential as a 250r.
thanks

oh, and BTW... like i said, i race woods. trail junk at high speeds is my concern, not 60 ft doubles. i don't jump a whole lot on mx track on it (yet anyways) just a couple little doubles (bout 20 ft or so each???) single the big ones for fear of breaking quad under heavy stress. i'm 5'9", 165 lbs. i belive the shocks are stiffened all the way (stock 1990 front shocks, rebuldable 87 rear shock) , and the ride seems either aweful rough. not sure if it is too soft, or too stiff. just not sure how to tell really i guess. i can dial the the stock suspension on almost any dirt bike (on a motocross track) to near perfection using the clickers in a matter of hours, but when it comes to quad, in the woods mostly, i'm in the dark. do you think backing off the springs would help at all and eliminate the need for aftermarket boingers? i have heard that the mojave is sprung rather heavy.
thanks again

The less tenstion you have on your shocks the better they will sock up the smaller bumps! so try setting them down some!

Not practical. You would need to rejet. Find a quiet aftermarket pipe instead.

Dennis Kirk and now, Rocky moutain atv sell Works Shocks. I put them on my Lakota witch is the same frame as the mojave for the most part and WOW what a difference. It handles way better than my stock 400ex. Definatly worth every penny. The front are A-T Steelers DRS(Dual Rate Springs) made for the Mojave. Dennis Kirk sells them for $328.99. The rear shock was a Quadstar SRS with a SRR(single rate spring with a smooth remote reservior) for $518.00. All of them were made for my body weight . Rocky Moutain ATV just started selling them so I dont know how much they are but I would check because they are usually cheeper than Dennis Kirk, but you have to call then. They dont have them on the web site yet. Best money you will ever spend. Best mod, hands down!

On this forum you will find everything you could ever want to know.
In my opinion the best mods you could do are the shocks. Then I would change the front sprocket to a 13 tooth for $6.99, put a supertrap ids2 exaust on it, K&N air filter, and rejet it, all to your door for less than $300 from R.M.-ATV.

Joreed> yeah, i know where that is. i know someone who goes to highschool there. you knowjohn lowry? his dad works with my dad.
e-mail me. maybe we can go riding some time. always looking for new people and places to ride with.

lewar85@sru.edu

i usually ride at hopp's switchback. you ever been there? it's in central butler county. check out the link in my original post. i usually ride my yz400 there, but decided to give quadmobiling a try, and am loving every minute of it (except how much dust they kick up when you're following one! *cough, cough* lol.....

i gave it some hard thought yesterday, and i think i am going to run the engine stock. any more power and i would probably get lazy and ride slower, cuz with a small engine it's all about momentum. gotta keep it on the pipe, keep rpm's up, and keep a watch way out ahead to find a good line to keep momentum up. with more power, you can pedink up to a hil or obstacle and just BRAAAPPPP the power on over it. (learned that moving from my xr200 to my yz400) good to have extra power on tap, but not a necessity.

suspension is the only thing i think i am going to look into. kinda expensive, but it won't take me long to save up some $ over the summer with my job.
what does the whole double rate, triple rate, quadruple rate suspension ratings mean?
i gotta relax more, too, when i ride, and let the quad do all the work. it runs so much smoother when you let it just do it's thing and not fight it, too.
thanks for the post murphyslaw. that helps a lot. now i know where to look for that stuff at, and that it actually works in the trees, not just the jumps. that's waht i always figured suspension was for... big jumps need better suspension, but i guess roots rocks hills, etc.. need better, smoooooooother suspension just as much as big jumps need stiffer suspension.
