Default Oil in airbox solution (cheap mod)

Most of my mod experience comes from racing corvettes, but the principles are the same, In the vette above 6000 rpm the oil gets siphoned from the crankcase (through the PCV) into the throttle body, just as the p650 does at high rpm into the air box. Which helps promote detonation, (very bad). The mod consist of getting a small Air/ water seperator filter for a air compressor (It is like a T fitting with a glass or clear plastic trap to catch the water) Put it in the hose that leads to the air box. This will serve two purposes, one it will keep the oil from reaching the airbox. The other is if you get a bit to deep it will catch the water and it wont go in the crankcase. (unless swamped). The part is available just about anywhere that sells tools, they even come in different anodized colors and it doesnt look bad. Mine is a Campbell Hausfeld part # mp5138 but any brand will do. It was $11 at autozone. Another thing to consider if you dont have this problem now, when the CDI changes your rev limit, it will be more likely to do it. On one 1/4 mile pass I collected an once of oil the first time with this mod on the vette. "Lean is mean but detonation is very bad." Sorry for the long post but I wanted to give details, hope it helps.

rivermud, good idea, you got a pic of this set up on your machine, this is a problem with the p650 that has been bugging me, how long have you had it like this?

Any problems? I think I am gonna do your mod too.

Hey Rivermud
My 03 spit out enough oil to foul plugs and smoke up the neighborhood,
Scared the $##@ out of me, thought I had blown it up.
I reduced the oil in the crankcase from the full mark by about 6 ounces.
Your point about the new CDI is a good one, I am going to do your mod.
Hopefully this will cure the problem even with the new CDI.

Sorry for no pic guys, (loaned the camera to a friend and he hasnt returned it.) This mod should work on anything that has a hose from the airbox to the crankcase. Also on the CDI the timing will be advanced to a degree where high octane is needed, therefore it will be closer to detonation, Have to keep the oil out. Thats funny oxygen, it is scary to see your baby smoking. This has been on the vette for a couple years and absolutely no problem, just empty it out when it starts to fill, You can just look and see it through the bowl so not much maintanace. I will work on getting my camera back for pics.

If you dont overfill the engine with oil, you wont have that problem

Actually that depends on the quad, I like to do all maintanace to spec, if the book tells me 1.63 us qt (with a filter change) thats what I like to put in. Also this depends on your Mods, I realize these bikes wont see the 12500rpm they are capable of, but with every mod you are raising the potential. This mod wont be for everyone, some people will never need it, but if I catch a half once of oil in mine through its whole life then it was worth the $11 I spent, just like an insurance policy (you dont need it now, but some day you might be glad you had it.)

Even if the RPM doesn't get ya...the weelies might. A few afternoons of riding my new Force and we were out running the quads HARD and pullin' wheelies and such. I stopped for a minute to shoot the breeze w/ a friend and when I started the Force back up it blew a huge cloud of smoke (Oxygen...I feel you man...) It only happened that once...and as soon as I ran her for a second the smoke stopped. Can only imagine oil got through the tube to the air box. (I don't think it was overfilled)

Not sure if it was RPMs or the wheelis....But....
If this little mod would stop THAT from ever happening again...I'd be willing to try it if it wouldn't hurt anything else.
