Predator 90 differences between 2003 and 2004
#2
For the Pred-90, I've been told the following:
- 03 is silver, red seat with red stickers. Troy-Lee is a different colour.
- 03 does NOT come with a factory chain tensioner.
- 03 comes with a solid steel chain guard.
- 04 is black with red seat.
- 04 comes with a factory chain tensioner.
- 04 comes with a bar type chain guard. It doesn't have a solid chain guard like the '03.
- 04 comes with a horn (as per its web site description).
Other then the above, no major differences that I'm aware of. To download a parts or owners manual for the Pred-90 line, surf: Parts & Owners online manuals and select the manual you need.
Hope this helps...

Sorry, bad choice of words in my previous reply.
When I wrote Chain Tensioner, I was meaning "spring loaded" chain tensioner. The '03 Pred-90 has the same chain tightening system as the E-Ton and many other chain driven minis. To tighten its chain, you loosen 4 big bolts on the back axle area, then turn the nuts on the little chain tightener bolt. As the nuts turn inward, it pulls the back axle further back from the front sprocket, and the chain becomes tighter. Think of the same concept as the back tire on a single speed bicycle. With a Sping loaded chain tensioner, one doesn't have to manually tighten its chain so often. The spring presses on a roller, which presses on the chain. Think of the same concept as the back tire on a 10 speed peddle bike. Regardless of the position of its Swing Arm, the chain is always at a firm tension. Hence less chain wear, less chance the chain will "ping" as its flops around, and less chance it will accidentally come off its back sprocket - especially during jumps and rough riding.
To install a Spring Loaded chain tensioner on an '03 Pred-90, surf:

Thanks for the info. I have been reding up on the Pred 90 and late last night was reading your tensioner issue with also being able to put the rear guard on it.
I wanted to get a 50 but we also want to get them into racing and the kids races are all 90s. We will have to find a dealer to test fit the kids before any decisions are made. I also have to look into the front suspension on the 50 since it wasn't an a-arm setup.
