Arctic Cat 90
#1
I am going to buy my son a 90 cc quad in the next couple days but am having a hard time deciding which one to get him.
I am looking at the Polars 90 2stroke. This bike runs great has good power , the only thing I dont like is that in CA it would get a red Sticker. So I'm thinking about a 4 stroke 90. I rode an Arctic cat 90 4 stroke yesterday. It seems like the engine runs good but the clutch seems to kill any speed and power the bike could have. I am wondering if there is any tweeks that can be done to these to get better performance out of them. I know it won't run like the 2 stroke but it could run 200 times better than it does now.

Welcome to this forum.
Within the Advanced Search window, type in "arctic" and press Search button. This will list many previous Arctic Cat posts. Stuff ranging from good, bad and performance upgrades. I did this and it pulled up 3 pages. Also look for "CAT" as well.
For CA region, I'd go with a 4 stroke unit. Even if you purchase a 2 stroke unit, I've read their green stickers will soon be replaced with red stickers. Thus, you'll probably have to sell your 2 stroke unit in 2 (or 3) years anyway.
Hope this helps...

The Arctic Cat quads have a brass restrictor in the variator in the clutch system. Plus they have a limiter on the cdi. Take out the brass restrictor inbetween the pully halves and replace the cdi. No problem I did the all the work myself, very easy to do.

Spike, I just talked to DMV and CARB who started all this 2 sticker mess. I started a thread about this very subject. "CALIFORNIA 2 stroke "GREEN STICKER" owners". In a nutshell, once a greeen sticker always a green sticker

TrailsToy, Yes it made a big difference. This was on my sons 50 Arctic Cat. The AC 4 stroke is only 81cc's and their 2 stroke is 89cc's. If your wanting the better of the 2 for most power the 2 stroke is better. But may require a little more maintence. Like you may have to rering it every once and awhile. I rering my sons quad every month. But this is counting atleast 3 races and about 10 hrs of practice every week. But this is on a highly moded 70 motor. My buddy only rerings his sons 90 2 stroke every spring. You said you looked at the Polaris 90 also. If it was the Preditor 90 they are a very nice quad. In stock form the Preditor will smoke the Arctic Cat. I've seen them both run in our racing series and the boys who run the Preditors are always up front. Now back to the 4 strokes.I've never seen any AC 4 strokes run. The AC quads are the most restricted quads on the market. I posted all the restrictors in some past posts. If you remove all these little restrictors they are ALOT faster (on 2 strokes). But like I said the CDI and the Variator restrictor are the biggest killers. I myself and this just how I feel, my son will only ride 2 strokes. He has rode some 90 four strokes and he hates them. He says there way to slow. He got use to the 2 stroke quick response and raw power.

I think there are thousands of people out there that are confused And the state likes it that way. Feed us information they want us to know Being the owner of a 2 stroke myself, I needed to know if I needed to sell it, before it was worth next to nothing.
TrailToys, If your considering a 2 stroke in California and want your son to ride it year round, make sure it is pre-'02. That way it has a green sticker. Other wise, your restricted to a red sticker and your riding will be basically 1/2 the year. Easy way to figure it out is, Eighth digit in the VIN is either a "3 or " C" on 2 stroke engines, that requires a red sticker by DMV.
