2004 Predator 90
#1
My little brother, 10 years old, is getting tired of the 30 mph speed and acceleration on his black 2004 Polaris Predator 90cc. What can we do to make his quad faster, higher top speed, and more "aggressive?"

To obain more bottom end power, one can modify their engine to create more PSI, install a Performance Pipe, install a clutch kit and install a better air filter (on its current 16mm carb). I've been told many times, the Pred-90's muffler and factory air box snorkle is like sucking / pushing air through a thin straw. Many say the air filter, pipe and clutch kit upgrades is the best bang for the dollar. To obtain faster ground speed, one can install a smaller rear sprocket and a CDI. With more bottom end power, its more bottom end power can be transfered to top end - assuming you have more bottom end power then you need. And the non-rev restricted CDI will allow it to REV faster then its current CDI factory limited module. To obtain faster throttle response, performance reeds can be installed. Some say removing the factory O/I system and running with pre-mix (say: Amsoil Intercept or Amsoil Dominator Pre-Mix Oil at 50:1) will obtain a little more power as well. And, one gets to control their oil mixture themselves. With all this, the Pred-90's 16mm carb will need to be re-jetted. Some say the factory 16mm carb is very hard to jet. Some can do it (by drilling out the carb) but others who live in mass altutude changes / mass climate changes (like myself), have a terrible time keeping this 16mm carb "dialed in" to a constant beer bottle brown spark plug color. Thus, they usually upgrade to a 20 mm carb. I've been told the 20 mm carb has better "impulse" at higher engine RPMs and is much "less sensitive" to weather / altitude changes.
After one upgrades their mini and makes it go 40+ MPH with a wheelie in any speed, one should upgrade its suspension. Stronger Swing Arm (factory Swing arm is weak), wider A-Arms (for less tipping), frame gussets and much better shocks. Thus, the young rider can then "hang onto their rocket without wipping out".
With all these expensive mods into a Pred-90 and thinking big picture, one often wonders if they should sell their Pred-90 "as is" and purchase a larger engine ATV. For example, Blaster 200 or Unison 150 (with their max throttle limits turned down). It all depends on the young riders current physical size, their driving skill level and legal restrictions within one's specific area.
If you want more details about upgrading the Pred-90 brand, contact Billy Holt at WRH Racing. He can help you "further tune" what should be upgraded for your Pred-90 (for your unique riding conditions) and if required, sell you the required parts. Possibly a bundled "warp" package or a customized bundle just for you (and your younger brother). His engine details are: http://www.wrhracing.net/engine_kits
Note: There are other Performance Consultants on this forum. I've obtained excellent knowledge from Billy many times over. For our trail upgrades, he's been "bang on" every time. Thus, he'd be the first person I'd call. Especially since his kids also race the Pred-90 brand.
Hope this helps....

Most bang for the buck would be the air filter and bigger jet. I removed the airbox and did a UNI air filter and went from a #87 jet to a #115 (about $20) and it made a big difference, sounds better too! Oh, get rid of that Oil Injection too.

Hey BANSHEEBRUCE....
Just imagine if you also installed a WRH Racing (or other proven brand) performance pipe, clutch kit and non-rev restricted CDI???
Bet your Pred-90 would do wheelies in almost any throttle postion. Seriously: Replace that straw hole factory pipe and you'll notice another huge performance jump. So I've been told many times over...
